Holding number for child

The oldest child (16) is wanting to get her own holding number so she can have a few cows of her own (she already has 10 on my holding number) but wants to do things properly and take charge and manage her own things. Has anyone done this? If so what are the practicalities as we will still share facilities and land etc, any pitfalls or suggestions? Cheers

It's almost impossible. And in addition, you would need to report movements and have standstill orders between holdings. TB testing would be a nightmare.

And don't even think about Farm Assurance inspections and Trading Standards.

But a proper Partnership, maybe later rather than sooner, would be a more practical way forward.

If running them together with the same land and handling facilities I wouldn’t have thought they would let you. We tried to apply for another holding number earlier this year for the calf rearing unit which would be using different sheds etc. They said it needs a different entrance so couldn’t do it.

Don't do it. It will lead to all sorts of complications about inspections, who is responsible for compliance and standstill rules.
Great to see her so interested so you can rent or feed at so much a week and split other bills to make it a realistic commercial enterprise

I did this when I started up. Rang up the rpa and told them I wanted a holding number for sheep on the farm. They gave it to me no worries. We always stuck to 6 day standstill but I don't know if we would have ever been pulled up on it or not as they don't know their arse from their elbow.

6 years later they rang me up and told me I had done it wrong and I was going to have to move all my animals to the farm holding number and I couldn't keep my herd mark for my pedigree cattle ownership of everything would have to be transferred.
I told them to go away and figure out a way to make it work as it was their fault and I wasn't giving up my herd number. It took them about 18 months and many phonecalls and letters to sort it out. Upshot is all the animals are on the same holding number now and we run two businesses off of it.

My advice would be don't do it it's not worth the hassle. Simplest way would be to keep it as it is and work out a rent figure for her animals. The only option the rpa gave me to keep my number was to take a field off the farm holding number and not let the the stock mix at any time.

I tried to get 2 holding and flock numbers, even dad having 1 and me the other but because same owner’s they wouldn’t let us, this was on 2 separate farms 3 mile apart. I wanted them separate because 1 would be organic at home and the other would be for short term rented land of conventional ewes. As it was within 10mile they wouldn’t give us 2 flock numbers or holding numbers, the flocks never mix or go near each other even yet if i buy in on 1 I’m locked down for 6 days 3-4 miles away 🤦🏻‍♂️

They gave a separate holding number to my wife. She genuinely needed one for her few pigs which were nothing to do with the farm partnership. Pigs were in same shed as our cattle. Never had any problems. Both holding numbers registered to same addreas. That was a few years ago though.

Was it just me, or did others get the wrong idea about this thread? I thought that perhaps all kids were going to have a big plastic eartag and would need a movement licence to take them to school :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
No your not the only one. It's EID compulsory for children or can they be management only? What's the max age for tagging? How long is the other species standstill? Etc etc
