Read the contract. Sections 7.2 - 7.4 the EU clearly havenā€™t paid for the vaccine up front. You have been misled. They have paid for the raw materials and packaging.

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/api/files/attachment/867990/APA - AstraZeneca.pdf

And it says upfront costs of 336 million euro plus an undisclosed amount for fill and packaging on 300 million doses . Which is in line with the UK Ā£65 million for 100 million doses and the US's $1 billon for one billion doses.
I am not sure why folk in the UK are getting in such a tizzy about an argument between the EU commission and a pharmaceutical company over a supply contract in the EU? :scratchhead:

There are corrupt people in every country, some are worse than others, those in positions of influence tend to be worse than most, by that I mean from.parish council upwards including public officials . Then again who on this site have never pocketed a few quid in cash ?

They are not at all.
What they are doing is using a cock up by the Eu to give it a kicking. šŸ„“

Europe!?
Did you see the program about Delorean? Running off with shed loads of uk taxpayers money meant for Belfast. More disappointingly, the Lotus guy, (Colin Chapman?) bent as, and would of been charged if he wasnā€™t dead by that time. I always rather liked himšŸ˜•

De Lorean first approached the ROI government with his plans. After much negotiation, the ROI pulled out because the then industry minister Des Oā€™Malley saw right through him. Oā€™Malley figured him glib, suave and too good to be true!

From my limited experience of international trade the corruption league table was
1. USA particularly good at buying Saudi princes.
2. Germany
3. Switzerland - money laundering mostly
4. Netherlands
5. Belgium
6. France
7. Russia and Eastern Bloc. Nobody wanted their kit anyway so bribery didnā€™t make any difference.

we usually had to pay ā€œcommissionā€ to Dutch agents totalling 5% of contract value so they made more profit out of the order than we did. It stank. But that was the way of it. Upset Mr Van Dyke and he would make sure youā€™d never get another order from king Rolla Rolla again.

I donā€™t think people generally realise how much corruption goes on in Europe. Itā€™s almost a way of life over there. Just one reason I tentatively supported Brexit. When my employer in Lincoln was taken over by a European firm the pension scheme was robbed blind by bosses on the continent. Spent it on luxurious homes etc and in the end they went to gaol. But the cash had gone and many colleagues looking forward to retirement at 60 had to work on to 65 and rely on state pension. I remember an Italian lady turning up at a UKIP meeting and urging us to continue as she said the U.K. is the only country that isnā€™t corrupt. Iā€™ll admit I was half hearted about it all and left UKIP before the referendum as I was getting cold feet but I reckon ā€œallā€™s well that ends wellā€ not that it ever really ends does it?
Did they get that idea from Robert Maxwell or Philip Green?

The problem with Europe is you have to be corrupt to go forward

And the joy of Britain, is everyone is whiter than white. Best in the world moral and ethical standards. Absolutely no chance in hell, of day to day connections of people in power getting lucrative contracts from the state. Gosh no. That would never happen.
