He (Walston) was a muppet
He didnt need the subsidy, but plenty others did.
Tony blair watched that and stuck the boot in
That’s rubbish what Walston said was’ why are you giving me a subsidy when prices are so high it makes no sense ‘ . When prices went down he was appreciative of subsidies. He was anything but a muppet he talked a lot of truth especially when read in hindsight. Tony Blair and the Labour party didn’t need Walston to tell them anything they didn’t already know.

I’ve re read all the old arable farming mags with Peter Hepworth columns in the last couple of years and I’ve really enjoyed them.he was growing 4 ton plus in the 70s mixing huge quantity’s of slurry into the soil and using the glencoe or a rabe plough.he loved his RPD amazone drill and his feet tractors.the Gladys mentioned above spent ages figuring weeds from the crops and I’m sure I remember him digging hedge bottoms too.i could have posted some articles but gave a couple hundred old copies of the magasine away just before Christmas.he was a man ahead of his time.l over his articles as I did Oliver walstons at the time.

Anyone with a brain knew why prices and subsidies were high, because of the weak pound after golden wednesday, combined eith a three year drought of 94,95,96
He should have kept his mouth shut.
Gordon brown stuck 10p duty on red deisel as a result of that programme.
Thanks oliver

Fair enough you live by a different code. I do remember him visiting the Manydown Estate where they had just sold 100 acres for housing and the owner was still pleading for his State support and as for Gordon Brown putting up the tax on diesel do you think they ran the economy on the back of what they watched on the telly.
As for Peter Hepworth a brilliant man.Who needs hedges ? In recent years travelling around Lincolnshire with my Dad was miserable you can’t see anything for hedges and trees.

Gordon brown was and is an imbecile.
I think he got his ideas from the beano.
His tax hike on fuel was devastating for scotland. I have been snp ever since.
But hey, he eliminated boom and bust remember!!!

Was Walston making a sideways observation about the CAP. And support for the Deficiency Payments System previously used by UK before accession to EEC.

Seem to remember , he had comfortable chair built on a frame that went on the front linkage for roguing grass weeds , one person drove down tramline and stopped as soon as the person on the chair saw a weed and got of and pulled it , never been anyone who's written articles in his very forthright manner since , straight to his page when "Arable" mag dropped through the letter box , didn't he die of farmers lung

Oliver's son David now runs the farm. Oliver was still about last time i was there about 3 years ago. David is a true credit to farmimg. He is also currently holding both Minnette and Tom B to account on twitter. He is a very very clever chap and also one of the best debators ive seen in recent farming time.
Worth following on twitter. He is also a real asset to his local community.
follow @ooohhh Farmer i think his handle is

I think Peter used to wax lyrical about Fendts............justified them because they'd last a lifetime.......wasn't long before they got traded in though..... :ROFLMAO: Didn't he buy a Quadtrack ? Or just had it on demo maybe ?

Which one? The guy at Basingstoke seems to have had the best crystal ball.

Hugh Oliver-Bellasis was way ahead of his time. He was one of the founders of LEAF and the principles of Integrated Crop Management. I saw his place a few times while I was at Sparsholt College, though I think it is mostly under bricks & mortar now as Basingstoke grew.

Oliver Walston just told it like it was. The governments were well aware of the faults of the CAP, they didn't just learn of them from him!
