I’m purchasing a 8340 coming on bald tyres so good chance to put wider ones on. Main jobs will be rolling and fert spreading. Very little road work. Will be doing low hours so want to last a good few years.
Question is what would be the best tyre for the job. Thinking 600/65r38 and 480/65r28
Don’t want to be bothered with duals.
trying to keep within £3k budget.
So far second hand 80%rear new fronts Michelin’s £3300
New Klebers£3000 with cashback
New Ceat £2500
Would you go second hand premium or new budget.

Personally I'd scrap the 600 65 38 idea and look for some 580 70 38 and 480 70 28. 600s don't seem to be the best of tyres for grip or carrying capacity. Nothing wrong with kleber tyres. I'd choose new over 80% second hand any day. Especially when there cheaper. Probably find 580s similar money to the 600s aswel.

Thanks for the quick replies. I had thought of 580s as have them on my 6r and like them well but thought they might be a bit big looking on a 8340. Regarding rim size I will have to check that.

Michelin have cash back on agri tyres at the moment as well, might help the job, if you’re looking at budget I’d probably look at BKT rather than kleber/ceat

There is a lot of merit in using the same size, and possibly make of tyre to what you already have, gives you options if one gets damaged and can use the same dual wheels.

In a similar pickle here.

Could you be a good chap and price a new set of Goodyear for me too. I’ve a soft spot for them on past performance in years gone by.

Goodyear were £3300 but price rising to £3600. I’d be very fond of old goodyear’s but unsure about new ones.
bkt were £2900 so they’re all much of a muchness apart from Michelin.

I might take the 580 advice though as not many rate 600s.

I’ve got an 8340 on Mitas 600/65/r38 and 480/65/r28 and another on Vredestein 520/70/r38 and 420/70/r28. Probably done 2000hrs with the Mitas no problems and 4000hrs on the Vredsteins, still plenty of tread on these but the rears do develop splits so probably wouldn’t buy these again.

I would have had BKTs instead of Mitas but they were on offer and cheaper at the time. The Vredesteins are off it for the winter replaced by a set of old terra tyres (rolling/spring fert). Ever so floaty just don’t do much roadwork!!!!

Ideally I would put new 650s on the 6r and swap over but as they’re mich on the 6r I’ll not be taking them off to replace with a cheaper tyre as it’s what I use 95% of the time.

Do 580s need as wide of a rim?? Guessing so as they’re as wide.

Bramble; How do you get on with 600s for grip?

Don’t really notice much difference between the 2 tyre sizes, the tractors are rarely used to do the same job side by side. Both do ploughing fine, the one on the Vredsteins is probably heavier as it has front linkage. Both have weight packs on.

Mostly carting, light cultivations when they're in the field. I'd say the 600's are fine for grip

600 /65r38 Michelin are about 45mm narrower tread than BKT 580/70r38. My BKT's are 610mm across tread, my mate with 600's Michelin's are about 565mm across tread.tractors standing together and we got tape measure out. And the ware on the Michelin's was bad after only 2000 hrs.over half gone. My BKT 's have done about 3500 hrs and very little ware, both tractors are hedge brusher tractors.

Fitted a lot of car tyres over the years, the width variance on different brands is amazing for the same ‘size’ tyre

What width of rims are they fitted too? My tyre mans happy enough putting on standard rims or selling a set of wider rims. Just said wider rims will get the most out of them.

almost feels like it’s consumer complaints territory. I measured my mich 580s they’re 590mm. I have yet to hear a bad complaint from BKT def considering them
Regarding car tyres. My mich are a touch wider than Bridgestone.

Thanks for all the help. Going to go for the 580s bigger foot print and hopefully a bit comfier. Hope it doesn’t make the tractor look like a roller skate.
