Chap I know in Herts glueguns cheap rape alarms onto them underneath, with a bit of fishing line through the stake. I've had a demo' in the daytime and: a) it is literally agonisingly loud and, b) it will seem a hell of a lot louder at night and when you aren't expecting it. Also, unlike a trip-banger, the rape alarm stays with the kit and just keeps on going. If we had problems here I'd consider it. (y)

If it's in a location that's long-term, I agree bury it. As @BertyTEF says an old ammo box is a good idea bolted to a paving slab or concrete fence post. Cover lid with a piece of turf or brash depending on the 'threat level'. TBH if someone goes equipped with a cordless angle grinder and a spade etc to nick an energiser in the middle of a field then perhaps you've got a problem where other things of value that could be nicked would worry me more.

Put some fence or snare pegs around it with a wire and a 12bore alarm mine. See what happens 😱
