How to find Farm Buildings to Purchase

We grow gourmet mushrooms and rent from another farmer.

Ideally we would like to buy some agricultural infrastructure - like a barn or some place with buildings (even if derelct) that are designated as for agricultureal use. We want to put our own buildings and possibly even a processing aspect (e.g. a kitchen that can make mushroom ketchup, pate, etc).

Any tips for findings places like this?

If you're in England you're competing with the class Q planning laws - redundant farm buildings can be turned into housing with no great problem nowadays, so prices will reflect that fact.

As always, why do you want to buy? I'll build you some buildings and lease them to you. I don't understand the obsession with owning it.
Isn't it the British obsession to want to own everything, people keep telling me I should be buying a house by know, why would I want to when I'm quite happy renting when I know the costs. Same with farm land and buildings, I would much rather rent 10 times the amount of ground than put all my money into something small.

Funny that, I’d much rather buy another 10 acres than rent 100

I bought a bungalow next to the farm as a possible retirement home, it amazes me that someone is prepared to pay more to rent it than a mortgage would cost

Over the long term property will go up in cost as will rent.

Worst bit of advice i listened to when Land was 3k an acre and interest was 10%, why buy when you can get £300 in interest and rent land for £150,

If you’re willing to dismantle and move the buildings, there are redundant mushroom sheds near me which were offered to me recently.

I would think the obvious thing would be to contact firms of land agents managing rural properties and inquire. Maybe the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors would have such a list?

I've totted up the costs of moving house, new boiler, decorating etc and it's not small. I prefered to rent and just move as my family grew. Retirement bungalow different.

Thanks for the heads up regarding land agents. I will look them up ... I was aware of Q Planning Regs and I can see the conflict I really don't want something like a 'barn' but really anything agricuturual would do (grain store, office, etc).

And for those people querying 'why buy' ... I rent at the moment. I want to grow my business substantially and every thing I do has to be negotiated. Its slowing me down and preventing us from expanding the way we want. Ideally we just need an agricutural piece of land we can develop the way we want into a farm and process our product (e.g. mushroom ketchup, pate, etc). We are wasting money 'going slow' to appease the landlord when it could be more cost effective if we could build a big barn with our required specs. We have the cash ...
