New power supply

We have some buildings about 100 metres from a 3 phase power line.

what is it likely to cost to install a new supply. Probably ought to go for 100kVA, but I’m feeling nervous about the expense.

would it be of benefit to put a large solar power unit in on the roof of the shed?

Recently put in new 50kva supply about 100 metres. New HV pole (on our land) and 50kva transformer. I then dug trench (through rock) and put in ducting to cabinet I had installed. They fed through LV cable from pile to box and installed fuses etc. They charged me £16,000 inclusive of VAT.

90 KVA upgrade 20m from our meter hut 5 years ago was £27k
Only benefit to a large solar array would be to the installer s bank account .---. Now there is no fit the sums just do not give a sensible return. Unless you can use all the leccy on site. Which is not easy as max output is on a summer's day when most folk have low leccy needs. Unless you run greet big cold stores.

That will almost certainly mean a half hour meter, which is a significant ongoing cost. Worth checking with you electric supplier though as they are nor all the same.

How long is a piece of string? There's so many variables that it's difficult to predict. For instance you might only be 100m from an existing supply, but there may not be adequate capacity there or in the local grid - in which case you could be talking mega bucks contributions to upgrades. The easiest option is to get your DNO or leccy supplier to quote for two options - the bare minimum supply & the nice to have supply.

Ask you local network operator for budget cost they are FOC you just need to supply site plans of where you want the electric to and a location plan that you can get online for less £30 to £50 you should have a cost on a couple of weeks .
if that is ok the detailed planning and quote will take longer as will arranging the supply work to be done but at least you will have a better idea of the cost.

I thought quotes were now chargable

I am going to be doing similar in a few years and while reading this thread got me thinking.

if the supply was on your land or the boundary of your land, could you build a suitable enclosure at the supply for the meter, cutout fuses etc. Then run your own cable the required distance to the building?

You can do that, but it can be a false economy depending on the distances and cable sizes required. It's best to discuss the options with the project surveyor.

Not certain about other areas, but UK Power Networks don’t charge for supply connection quotes.

Northern power grid do, it came in at a meeting a few years ago i was in on renewables. The power companies were sick of the world and his dog asking for quotes for free which came to nothing they applied to ofgem or whoever to allow it to be a chargable item. I think northern power grid is £500 not sure if they give you a ball park but i know to get itemised its charged

You can, but on a big supply with a long run you could be looking at towards £20 / meter for cable..So usually best to get the meter near to where you want the power

Quotes may well be chargeable i know i have paid for them in the past but a "budget cost" is free, I got one last week for a property in the North west and it only took around 10 days , at least that way you know it viability prior to apply for full quotation cost and the extended time scale that can take , admittedly it may change in terms of the actual cost when the work is done but rather than speculate at least you know
