How to kill Rye grass

I've had good control from Broadway Star + non ionic wetter (+ water conditioner if the water is hard). Ryegrass has a waxy leaf, so I wonder if a combined wetter/MSO adjuvant would be better. @Corteva Technical ? Your trade off is crop damage, so don't go overboard on adjuvants.

It needs warm weather & a soil temperature of at least 8oC, a couple of degrees warmer than you would for Atlantis/Pacifica type products. Avoid other sprays for 2-3 weeks afterwards or you risk crop damage. With those temperatures, you will be very close to T0 timings, so plan ahead well.

As Brisel said, you can investigate the use of a water conditioner if needed.

I used to use broadway star with biopower or drill (combined MSO/non-ionic deely) or activator 90. Always had good results on ryegrass, in fact, in my experience it was a 'better' product than axial in many ways- handier to use, cheaper(?) and did some BLWs into the bargain.

You could try Pacifica (plus biopower) on a bit and see if that works. Will entirely depend on your population and what it is resistant to. If it is resistant to Atlantis mind don't expect miracles from Pacifica.

I would not use any of the above unless conditions are reasonable and growy. I would probably delay any PGR use until after T0 or until T1 if you have just given a crop Pacifica or broadway star. Fungicide/trace elements a week or 10 days after would not worry me as much.

Axial Pro does nothing. Would Pacifica Plus maybe do the job this spring?

I’ve said this before but Ryegrass is worst than Blackgrass and I think will be a much bigger problem for this country. BG can be effectively managed by a mix of cultivation, no till drilling, rotation and chemistry. RG can’t. We’ve got two options for RG and that’s roundup and Defy - see attached.

Ploughing and stale seedbeds don’t work for it and crops like spring barley or rye that smoother ground are less effective also.

It's an awful weed. It germinates when it feels like doing so, though stale seedbeds and spring cropping do help, if only by having more time outside a cash crop when you can use glyphosate.

For what it's worth, I've had good control of tested & confirmed RRR black grass with Atlantis applied when the weed was very small as part of an expensive tank mix.

Spring crops are ok but you end up glyphosating multiple times which lets face it is bad for the environment and not a long term solution.
I think we’ve come to the conclusion that grassing down is the way out and then end up selling carbon rather than harvested crops.

Have you tried rimsulfuron, niceosulfuron or the twin ALS product i.e maize herbicides?

I bet spuds would give you a chance to get away from it.

Non arable farmer reading with interest. It seem the battle with grass family weeds just keeps evolving.
Why has RG become such a problem? What about farmers grown PRG as a rotational crop or are the cultivated varieties killed off more easily?

What wetter/ adjuvant type stuff do you use with it? have tried Bio Power but do not think it is strong enough.

i wont use anything else after seeing some trials a few years ago

The arable weed problems are usually from Italian Ryegrass. Seed breeders of ryegrass may have been unknowingly breeding up resistant types.

Its normal here in france to use an oil with Pyroxsulame (active in Broadway Star) but many people also add Ammonium Sulphate. Its recommended by Arvalis (sort of French ADAS).

Interesting. If it was meant as a water conditioner then it’s not much good. AS only helps glyphosate though there may be other benefits.
