How stupid can Plod get?

Bit like a plane crash in Africa . 3 BRITISH nationals killed .... also 250 darkies. I don’t want to downplay the murder of Sarah Everard but there would have been a lot less outcry had she not been a youngish attractive white female. If she’d been another colour they may have been ptotests but they’d been easier to playdown.
The most shocking thing about this murder isn’t so much the victim but the fact that the murderer was a police officer.
Had she been murdered by just about anyone else I suspect her murder would be old news by now and practically forgot about other than by friends and family .

Really? Really? 'Old news?' Your empathy is overwhelming?.

Statistics in the news, 120 women a year murdered, how many of their names do you remember, how many do you even know?

These deaths will all be devastating to the families and friends but for most of us we don’t even know about them let alone remember them, life goes on as normal.

This case has remained in the headlines purely because the chief suspect is a policeman. Not sure how much that matters to her friends and family, the fact that she has been murdered is absolutely devastating for them, it’s hard to believe it would have been any better if it had been someone else.

Are the names important? I'm not going to go into details - especially not here. (And why would I need to 'know' even one of the women murdered in order to feel empathy?) But the awfulness of our daughter's death (not 'murdered' in the criminal sense, but killed nonetheless) lives on in a very large number of people's memories.

One thing people forget is whether the victim is a female or male the loss of life is the same and should be looked upon the same. We are now getting into a media fueled frenzy that the loss of a female life is more important that a mans life.
The members of the police force are not different the the rest of society. The ranks of the police force mirror the type of people outside, so it is evident that within the police forces you will always get "bad apples", they may never come to light in doing their job but they may have a different side to them which as in this case caused immense harm and the loss of a perfectly innocent person. Let us not chastise the police forces for someone doing something in their private lives which the police forces have no direct control on.

People went to Clapham and paid their respects during the day yesterday, went home, grateful for the opportunity to do so.

As the day went on, more attended. The Police stood back, asking for people to move on after a reasonable period. Many complied. Happy balance, public pay respects.

What went wrong? People stopped complying, refused to leave. Turned against the obvious target of police present, verbal and active resistance. Now it’s become a protest, with chanting and singing. No longer a vigil, no longer Covid compliant.

What should the Police do, stand back? Allow Covid rules to be broken?
They can’t win.
Take action, get criticised. Stand back, get criticised.
This won’t bother the Met, they’ve been here a thousand times before.

Their response was necessary to control aggressive resistance of the activists present.
The media love it, the politicians wade in with absurd calls for the commissioner to quit, not wanting to be the one to go against popular opinion and support the police.
Could be the vigil have been allowed with stewarding; possibly?
Would that have stopped it becoming a protest?
We don’t know, but with the strength of feeling about women at risk coupled with the presence of activists and the target of police present, more than likely.

The Met responded on the night in a way that was proportionate to the threat they faced.

Don’t like what happened last night? Then listen to and comply with requests from law enforcement agencies.

Compare that to a perfectly peaceful, socially distanced vigil in Nottingham....same reason, no problems.
Went to the doctors today, forced to sit 4 metres apart, temp taken & not allowed to come any where near the receptionist on the way out & yet these prats seem to think that because it was a "vigil" then everything is ok. The Police should have surrounded the lot & fined everyone on the way out. We have the worst death rate anywhere & yet the Chinese have no cases & few deaths, I wonder why maybe because the Chinese know better than to disobey orders! Why do these fools think they get to decide just when police should look after theirs & others well being.

You went to the Doctors and had to have your temperature taken and sit 4 metres apart you should be grateful they are taking that level of care. 40% of Covid is caught in Hospitals. You would be a lot safer at a vigil than at any healthcare facility. The UK has a high death rate for lots of reasons and having a much older and far unhealthier population than China is just one of the reasons.

I thought the unmasked were responsible for most, if not all infections!?

Some male TFFers have experienced sexual harassment, and know first hand how that makes them feel. Some of those will also have a shrewd idea of how seriously any report of it they might make would be taken under the current laws around sexual harassment.

Just out of interest, a question to the male TFFers to ask themselves (no need to reply): How long ago was it that you first bought a pepper spray and/or personal alarm to take with you on a night out, or take with you when simply walking from A to B when away from home by yourself?

I wonder how many of the women attending the event, found themselves travelling home, late at night, on their own, through totally unknown to them places and circumstances?

These looney vigils, stacks of rotting imported flowers wrapped in plastic & cellophane that some poor sod has to clear away, some saving of the planet it would be far better they had all used that wasted money to contribute to a charity for battered women but then of course they wouldn't been seen to be "caring" would they.

You really don’t get it, no amount of donations will make the slightest difference andtjis is not just about domestic violence.
It is about the fact that it is not safe for women to walk down the street, oh and men too.

Professional agitators just use events like this, they dont care about this young lady. You also have people who are sick of covid restrictions and just make the most of the mass breakout. I would water cannon and rubber bullet the lot of them. Countrys gone soft.

Yup, and men too. I wouldn't be comfortable wondering around the streets of London in the dark either. And I sure as hell wouldn't do it during a lockdown ( elephant in the room there....)
The only way I can see to make things safer is more police on the beat. The more criticism plod receive, the more likely they'll stay in the station eating donuts instead. Little is done about theft thanks to the burden of paperwork. This country is going to be woked into oblivion.

And you believe abusing the police will improve things, seems a warped strategy to me!

Bunch of keys .... always got them, not illegal and most useful to defend yourself with.
I was born and raised in Oxford and there are parts of the City you wouldn`t go at night, irrespective of gender.
I now live in Leicester and nothing has changed, plenty of places you wouldn`t go at night, irrespective of gender.
The perception of fear has a lot to answer for, as does the behaviour of a very small minority of men.

Not read the whole thread but I find if bonkers to think the could hold a gathering , the whole nation is doing there bit, there was simply no need for a gathering , yes someone was murdered and that is awful but you simply can’t do what you like. The trouble is the police hate the job they are doing , my mates a copper and he says it’s a total joke of a job nowerdays and I feel for him. The met should have only sent women offices to the job mind

The news has it in for men at every level at the moment ... it’s starting to pee me right off even from up in my so called ivory tower of white male privilege!! Their words not mine I work ever single day ov the year in all conditions

I'm genuinely pleased to know that you are not part of the problem. I don't think that anything is deliberately aimed at all men. Far from it. The trouble is that the actions of the few make life difficult for the many.

In drawing attention to how men who are a problem continue to get away with behaviour the thought of which rightly upsets the majority of other men, it is to be hoped that laws and guidances will be brought in for the better - and not just for women.

Something I didn't realise about Saturday was that the organised vigil was cancelled (I thought a doorstep vigil was going to be concurrent). The gathering happened despite that. It could have taken place peacefully but for the presence of agitators who would not disperse.
