Anyone know who made this - and who could fix it.

Hello Everyone

Just took the power steering ram of a 1971 Ford 5000 and having difficulty finding someone who can repair and service them as this type is so old now my local Hydraulic company cant help me out and a few others Ive called again, cant help me so not sure who to go to - It leaks so needs new seals and a valve is also leaking/bypassing. The ram has not got any identifying marks on it and I dont know if this was fitted as an after market addition or if it came as part of the original set up. Anyone recognise the make and/or able to recommend anyone who`s able to refurbish it. I know there are new rams on the market that I could source but the bit that puts me of is that some say "not compatible with OEM equipment" - not sure why. I can sent it anywhere in the UK to be worked on but handy if its down in Sussex or Hampshire. Hopefully someone in TFF will be able to help me out.

Get you old one repaired
As said try the above companies or plant fitter hydraulic seam handy chaps the system is quite old so the young bucks in the hydraulic firm don't have a clue what to look for because it aint listed ont puter in front of them.... you need the old lads int back room (joke)

New ram kits isn't as straight forward to fit had success and failure with headaches

Easier to spend a bit more on your old stuff that's made of something decent plus it keeps the guys in a job that wear overalls,
not the shirt n tie

It should have numbers on one end probably 1400010 or 1400177, Power Steering Services used to make and repair, worth a try.

The one on our 5000 started leaking, from memory it had quite a square seal in it, I found two O rings the right thickness and cut and superglued them so they were the right diameter and put them in side by side, 15 years later its still fine

I had one repaired on my 5000 a few years ago by local man in Carlisle .he seemed to now his job . Said they were designed or made by Company called hydro steer or hydra steer .and were to a similar design or same design fitted to earlier wagons like Bedford and suchlike.he said when hydro steer finished all the tooling was scraped. Quite a delicate valve inside and if not set up right could be quite dangerous when he mended mine and it still leaks slightly getting worse he said he didn’t want to do it again.

David Brown power assisted was the same idea, Bedford, Austin and Morris commercials all used the same setup. And seem to think the JCB 3c did as well.

I wish I'd kept my old DB service manuals now, it explained how to adjust the valve in the ram.
