long story short, me and my father used to milk dairycows, were lowland farm, east midlands, we stopped milking for various reasons but rather then sell the herd i retained our britishblueX & herefordX heifers and AI'd the dairycows with sexed stabiliser and salers semen in our last year to give us another batch of dairyX to get numbers up & create a heinz57 suckler herd
I purchased a polled saler bull, to keep his daughters as replacements and get a polled more uniformed herd.

we sell some stores online and finish the rest and sell through the ring.
I need another bull as 1 is working fairly hard at the minute :D (worse jobs to have) , i want something native, as its my local i thought a lincolnred, but im guessing a LR x saler will be abit 'plain' though
my initial plan was to go british blue over the salers cows but the idea in my head of moving toward a native breed herd wont go away

anythoughts ,

LR being local might be good. Others will know better @Wolds Beef but you could go for one with more imported blood in it

Angus - some are bigger than Charolais bulls which is the choice of many commercial Saler folks

I can always sell you a Galloway bull and with a belt or a lineback

One word. Charolais. Put on Salers cross cows you will not do any better and Charolais can be sold at any time and are probablly most in demandas stores. There are some good polled bloodlines about which calve really easily, and get up and suck well. I know it's not native but you will not go wrong with that cross, they just work really well together.

Native charolais?

We've put some salers to Hereford bull and seems to work.

JP1- yes one of the XP type with a bit more backend on it, presumably they lose some calving ease because of it.

bluepower- ive no experience with char but they are prone to big calves and difficult calvings? i have seen the yellow X calves though and they do look cracking. if i go down the 'shapely' route i would probably get a britblue, always found them easy and chill.
Ive not had the vet or the knacker man out in about a year and im growing rather fond of it :D

Chae1- what did they grow like? do you think the saler added anything into the mix? plenty of milk & added calving ease? did the heifers grow any bigger or stay small and fat.

I don’t suppose a Lincoln Red X would be any more plain than most other native crosses, and likely better than plenty of the hill types.

I have a polled charolais and have Never assisted a calving or put a calf on to suck by him. All the difficult calvings and dopey calf syndrome is a bit of a myth these days, having said that we have a Blue that calves very easily and throws small, lively calves.

Angus and saler cross very well, I've done it. Modern charollais cattle are much improved for calving ease and are the best cross for the saler cow.

Only my opinion but why would you waste a saler cow by putting a native on them.
Charolais or blue or another saler for the hf breeding job.
i wouldnt go as far to say im wasting them, id get milky easy calving cows, they might add some size maybe? and would add hybrid vigour over purebreds
