Crikey. Who wrote that? The same person who was writing Ladybird books in 1956?
Next time the lads are in for some scrap I’ll let them know you need a hand with your harvest, though if it involves shuffling more than 10 yards from the tranny for more than a couple of minutes for an instant profit of at least a tenner then I’m not sure they will be that interested. Sadly they have found much easier ways to make a living.

My Grandparents had a bolt on the attic door, to be slid across at night so that the harvest workers sleeping up there couldn't do a midnight flit with the silver.
The relationship between farmers and travelers has always been an uneasy one, but above that it was one of mutual benefit. Did they turn to laying tarmac and dealing in scrap because it was an easier living, or because mechanization forced them out of farm work ? Probably a bit of both.
I found the article useful in reminding us that, until yesterday in the scheme of things, farmers depended on travelers as much as they now depend on mechanics and IT nerds. Some tolerance within the law to allow a way of life to continue seems to be the thrust of the article.
As another minority that often gets vilified by society at large, farmers should have some empathy with their efforts to resist punitive legislation.

What a load of **** I live in an area that once made extensive use of travellers for seasonal work, they used to travel round the same circuit year after year, there is still plenty of agricultural work in this area, veg planting, fruit picking potato packing etc, the travellers however prefer a combination of unlicenced rubbish collection resulting in flytipping, tree surgery resulting in flytipping, petty thieving and claiming benefits.

As I said, thieving is nothing new. As for the rest of it, you are highlighting problems that exist in countless northern towns that had the guts ripped out of them by Government policy. You don't have to be a traveler to turn to drugs and benefits. The proposed new legislation will help, how ?

When did the destruction of these northern towns start ? If you're on benefits how do you afford the drugs, thought benefits weren't enough to buy food

It's oh so easy to have sympathy for these travellers from a distance when you are not at all affected by the problems & mess they leave behind, yet again we have someone living in a fairy tail world instead of the real world that the rest of us have to live in.

Sorry to shatter your stereotype, but I have told travelers they had an hour to be gone or I would be back with the slurry tanker. They went.

This document is interesting. Note especially the response of the police to these proposals. If you don't have the police on side you're not going to get far with it. The issue, fundamentally, is site provision.

Heard that gang at the oxford farming conference. Odd bunch name doesn't accurate describe them. They are more of a socialist workers party. All farm owners are bad, taking advantage of all their workers etc. Their aim was to convert all farmers to collective farms. AKA Russia and Ukraine 1920s onwards. Dont know who their actual members are but they seemed to be a lot of community urban farm types.

I have told them I can't join until they drop their membership of an 'eat less meat' campaign. Which is petty of me really, as they do an awful lot to support new entrants and promote what is now described by the mainstream as 'regenerative agriculture'. I am not aware of any collective farm ambitions, on the contrary their members are far more free market orientated than most on here, given that they typically get no bps.
