They are their own worst enemies, if they didn't leave rubbish & scrap everywhere when they leave people might be more accommodating but sadly that is rarely the case!

It still doesn't mean that the government should be able to criminalise their very existence.

Politics has been particularly bizarre post 2017, the last thing I want is to see state-created "Untermensch" come into existence.

Like most people on here, I have had mixed experiences with travellers, some very negative, many positive: I was "looked after" by the head of our local settled gypsy community as a child on the way back from sea fishing trips which ran out of our local pub when my dad couldn't make it, I have fond memories of being fed kit kat in the back of a transit whilst the men drunk cans on the way to the pub. It also meant that they were extremely polite to my family, with my mum being head of the local primary school often having had an errant child dragged back in by their mother to apologise to her for being naughty etc.

The thing I cannot stomach about this bill its it's attempts to criminalise an entire ethnic group for nothing other than existing.
Wherever nomadic and settled groups coexist, there is conflict, and this is often used to bring in draconian legislation of this nature - in almost every authoritarian far right society, it was the Gypsies that were targeted first.

"First they came for the Gypsies, but I did not speak out, for I was not a Gypsy....."
The vast majority are not gypsies they are scum. We have at least seven camps within four miles of us, everyone full of theiving barstewards, none pay council tax most let their sewage run over others ground, the nearest one only last month broke into the sewer by digging across a horse paddock belonging to one of my customers without either their or the water authority 's permission. When you say the old line about when they came for the gypsies I did nothing because I wasnt a gypsy it makes a mo kery of justice and respect for others, every single one of them need dumping in the sea

You have no idea if they pay their council tax or nor - unless you somehow work for the council and have seen the reciepts. You also have no idea how many have stolen things, unless youve taken some sort of survey you'd like to share with us...

What you have done, however is perfectly illustrated my point about the rationale for using Gypises as a "feeling out" exercise for state de-legitimisation of the existence of entire ethnicities of people.

It's where Mussolini started, and you can see it again with Salvini.

Lots of people do - ever broken the speed limit?
We have all broken the speed limit but I caught we face the fine and pay it or face court and go to jail these scum break every law know to man with it appears total impunity, they threaten public officials, use intimidation against any one who stands up to them, was at the local garage in 2019 when a group arrived kids in the shop stealing sweets wouldnt pay for the fuel etc etc and nobody does a thing slightly different from breaking the speed limit

Ah, so breaking the law is fine when you do it, but not fine when people you believe are beneath you do it. Got it.

You are quite wrong, I was told by a copper that every single male in one camp had been accused of theft , the local councillor for a different one has been told by the relevant dept that no one pays tax, I could go on and on about these scum, when you have to put up with them stealing etc you will change your view, we havent had any trouble recently due to my "persuading" one of the barstewards that Iwasnt going to back down to them.they only understand one thing.

Interesting - so both your councillor and copper are comfortable breaking GDPR and are therefore criminals. Also everyone? Infants?

Speeding has much more potential than theft to cause injury and death, so it's probably worse than petty thievery (although I've driven too fast in my time but I've not stolen anything).
What a load of rubbish, the one where I was told about the cops wont go in unless accompanied by armed support, it's not pretty thieving, they stole a quad bike from a disabled farmer and have stolen several trailers from a charity that teaches handicapped kids, how much lower can you get,

Yeah, and I agree that thieves should be prosecuted, but that is entirely different from criminalising an entire ethnicity for daring to exist. Do you think that sort of thing will increase or decrease criminality in those communities?
If it increases criminality in spite of the legislation (which it probably will, given that it criminalises them for existing), then what?
How long before you are wanting them rounded up?

They should be rounded up if they are criminals, it's just a shame we are in a common travel area with Ireland or we could send them back, my best friend lived in Ireland and his widow does, the irish hate this scum as much as we do of course there are some who are decent and honest, the one family I know that are decent refuse to have anything to do with the rest and describe them in the same way I do.

My understanding is that they would not be criminalised by simply existing but could be prosecuted if they turn up mob handed at the local football pitch & then proceed to wreck it, why in heavens name is this wrong, if we turned up with tractors & took over the pitch we would be prosecuted what's the difference?
The law should be equal for everyone not special exceptions for some!!
