I want a 404M to mill straw for the dry cow rations. Does anyone have one, can you get a short chop length?

I see you can put a different screens in, dealer says it has a 20mm screen in at the moment and you can go smaller

I think brother in law has this model, it does chop it short but I think he says it is quite slow the shorter the chop.

I have a 505M for bedding cubicles.

21mm screen in ours.

Doesn't take very long to bed up 100 cubicles tbh.
It does depend on the straw you are putting through it.

Say as small as 10mm!

I had a demo first.

Stayed on farm.

There is a trailed one that has a movable screen so you can use it as a straw shredder as well.
It is more money though.
Maybe worth a look if you want to combine two machines?

I saw one of those on YouTube unfortunately I already have a tidy trailed Kuhn blower that I paid 6k for and it hasn't done any work. The 404m would be 2nd hand and I think the dual chops are 22k new so it's not worth it to change I don't think.

It I was starting from scratch it would be a no brainer.

Fair enough.

Dual chop isn't 22k. IIRC was quoted 16k ?

8150DC with 30mm screen was just over 16k
8555DC was just over 17k.

Trade in on 505 wasn't enough to make up the difference between Mchale and teagle dual chop tbh.
30mm we thought was bit too long for cubicles as well.

Average chop length with my 8550 is well above 30mm too.
It’s fine for chopping straw to incorporate into a diet but not short enough for cubicle bedding in my opinion

Why is it important to have short straw for cubicles? We are hoping to move a lot of heifers off straw yards into cubicles this coming winter.

Maybe depending on system but with grids and channels anything long would be unworkable, I currently use sawdust, I have considered using milled straw but would need to find someone to mill it down to a fine enough consistency.
The output from my 8550 wouldn’t come close

Is the build quality & design any better now than a few years ago ?. We had a mounted Teagle bedding machine , had a habit of eating shear bolts on the shredder as it set off at the same time as the blower. Changed for a Kuhn with hydraulic engagement of shredder & is just a better thought out machine altogether.

I certainly wouldn’t rate build quality particularly highly, mine caused more problems in its first couple of years than my previous KV did in 15 and Teagle/dealer wouldn’t honour any second year warranty.
Given that my KV wasn’t worn out after 15 years , I changed because I wanted the versatility of a swivel spout and the dual chop, I thought there was a good chance this machine would see me out, I’m certainly not convinced of that now.
That said, there’s limited choice of what I can buy as a dual chop machine
