So the feral cats are a problem, but so are the mice 🤔

did you even read the article ? ?
i doubt it

they are cyclical
there is no way any predator can keep up with their numbers

and feral cats would rather eat other things than stinking dirty f#cking mice.
like native marsupials, birds & reptiles . . .
feral cats are just c%nts of things anyway

PS - ALL introduced feral animals are a problem here, be it mice, rabbits, cats, foxes, dogs, goats, pigs, donkeys, horses, camel, buffalo or people . . .

Sounds uncomfortable to say the least
...
Does the onset of winter kill them?

not really, due to recent good season they have plenty of food & shelter & they also have extensive & deep tunnels / burrows

a really good hard cold snap following rain, combined with disease pressures from overpopulation & cannibalisms ( yes, mice eat mice when their numbers get high enough ), is about the only way to get rid of them

I remember reading about a rat plague in the 1880s, when they ate Kidman's saddle and bridle etc, bar the metalwork, overnight in the tree where he had hung it for safekeeping.

Racumin foam at least they go outside to die.
I think I would surround my house and buildings with a 12"+ high board with a 210 ltr / 45gallon drop trap every 10 or 20m. The old pivot system with peanut butter at the end of stick. They worked well with rabbits and rats.
