Mining crypto

Finite quantity of units of bitcoin but infinite units of crypto currency can be generated.... Cryptocurrencies having a value is like me declaring the top soil from my garden is a limited and precious resource and then selling wheelbarrow units of it to speculators as "Farmerm's ultra limited, super rare, one of a kind, garden soil"!
And there's nothing stopping you from trying to do that.....

Turn money into nebulous "magic beans" folk ascribe value to on the basis that Elon musk tweets about it.

To the moon Tesla, to the moon!

What's that rule about investment trends, if you hear a tip from a cab driver, it's time to get out and fast? If you read about Bitcoin mining on TFF, is it all rather too late?

I read that you were better off to spend the money you were going to spend on a mining computer on the coin itself.

I bought £100 of ETH at the same time, that's now 'worth' £140 so it has done well but nothing like Elons dog.

I agree with the artists formerly known as Static though that it's all worthless really. You can't actually use it to buy anything?

But doesn't Yuval Harari say that one of the greatest stories ever told is the story of money. Given it's not backed by gold (which in itself won't directly feed you when you're hungry), it's just works because everyone believes the story. Crypto really interests me because it will either be the thing that radically reshapes the world or flops massively, but I managed to spend years and years not noticing it, which is the same as all major things that fundamentally alter our world. I remember thinking smart phones were not that important and I didn't need one...

But who is trading $billions of a made up currency with a dogs face on it?! It doesn't even have the finite supply of bitcoin.

Get yourself the Binance app on the smartphone you didn't want and get stuck in.

I don't understand it. I'd like to read more about it though because I feel somewhat like I shouldn't be so ignorant about it all.

As above, I don't understand it either, but I got the Binance app on the smartphone that we'd all be better off without and punted a couple of hundred pounds of her majesties finest.

I think it's like the Dutch tulip bubble, it's hot right now, everyone one wants a piece of it, but rationally, noone knows why they want it?

I’ve invested heavily in Nvidia and AMD shares - in a gold rush its the guys that sell the shovels that make the money !

That's a good idea, I put the children's child support money into a share account, choose a different company each month, it might be enough to buy them a battered old Tesla when they turn 17!

This explains why RTX3080 and 3090 graphics cards are like, well, gold dust.

I’m looking at a new gaming computer, would it be possible to use something like a Ryzen9 with RTX3070 to mine crypto at the same time or when the computer is otherwise not being used???

yes - my sim mines when not being used, has pad for the sim probably !

would not buy GPU’s just to mine though……. mugs game ultimately

Nvidia and AMD share prices have both fallen over the last month, does this tell us something about crypto?

Becoming harder to mine, people going off it etc?

Can you go through the process of setting up a computer for mining?
Software required?
The mechanics of mining Bitcoin?

there are complex ways that will yield better if you are computer literate enough but for simplicity download Nicehash miner, create an account and press start

open a coinbase account for a safe wallet and transfer to that when you have enough to be worthwhile

don’t bother trading - its no better than betting on horses ! those that think otherwise forget its been almost impossible to loose on constantly rising markets …….. so far !

Cheers. I’m starting to understand the story of the IT technician who was caught secretly using his schools entire computing capacity to mine crypto when the classroom lights were off.

look at their performance over the last decade

more recent falls are down to them becoming so dominant they are pushing anti competition laws !

Getting in is easy. It's the getting out. Some will make a packet, but once the supply of new money buying increasingly small chunks dries up.......sound familiar?

It takes a big ballsack to see something double in price and say "that's it" and cash it in. Because even when you sell, you're still watching it, aren't you?

Nope. Tells you only about speculative demand for their stock. Price of GPUs up 300 percent......supply down more. Result?
