Best Plain Disc Mower?

Looking at getting a plain disc mower (no conditioner), as should be able to get one that's 13ft-14ft, mow quicker and generally less to go wrong (hopefully!). We have a 6 star tedder to turn it if needed.

Are there any makes that are better than others or some that really should be avoided?

Thanks.

That's over 4m , even as a straight mower that's a fair way out.....and up when folded.

We ran a Lely for year did the job but blade replacement was constant.

Now have straight pottinger front and rear.
Better built machine and blades last years.

It's also about matching your mower rows to stars on tedder.
Krone have a useful chart in their online mower brochure to help match up.

Yeah the ones over 12ft are usually out behind the tractor not fold up. Hear very mixed reviews on lely.....usually not so good! Ah interesting didn't think about that, cheers.

I have a Kuhn gmz 3.2 metres, that s plenty tall enough when folded up. Mower run's ok but I never enjoy hitching to tractor, it's one of those you have to be perfect in alignment. I would probably have a krone or McHale next.

We have a jhondeere new vertical fold is super easy to hitch up and verry nice to use always worried as never had a mounted before and feared itd be the same a hitching the headge trimmer on definitely not the case nerly as easy or easyer

Tedding out wide rows is normally not ideal and tedders also often struggle to pick up grass out of a straight mower as it sits on the ground more if you get what I mean. Trying to ted after our 3.2 meter plain mower can be a pain at times.

Does depend on rotor size and matching the rows up.

Had a 4m kuhn for years no problems, only down side its like transporting a 6 f plough with the tail swing. It matches perfectly to a 8m tedder and doesn't strain the tedder due to being spread out fully to start with

I’ve got a 4m Krone. Pretty robust, good paint, folds to the rear of the tractor like a plough, hydraulic top link essential unless you want to remodel gates, banks and hedges.
It makes two 2m rows as it has ”top hats” in the centre of the bed.

Vicon plain disc mowers are very good. 3 blades per disc so they last so much longer, got a front and back set up and can’t fault them. They used to make a 4m one that would leave 2 swaths.

The OP asked about plain disc mowers. You refer to a moco’

Sorry wouldn’t have a plain mower given me, makes life harder for the Tedder and rake, we row some up for a customer with a plain mower! Rake man either has to reduced speed or alter rake to pick everything up, 🙈🙈

Kuhn or pottinger or krone or vicon, kv, malone like everything when they get worn out abit output drops! But that’s what you pay for in a main brand.
