Just an update ended up buying a Massey Ferguson (fella) twin rotor rake will be delivered next Monday. Does anyone on hear run one? Any tips for setting it up?
Tines should touch the grass, not the soil

Run the PTO somewhere around the 450rpm. Increase rpm will gather into a narrower row, but will make grass into a rope with lumps

Slower PTO speed is for long stuff, faster for short leaf

Forward speed is fast as it'll go without missing bits or making lumps, and PTO speed affects this too. Start about 5mph in leaf, 4mph in long stuff. Better going a wee bit slower and making a good row

Go slower downhill than up or you'll miss and your downhill row will have lumpy edges

If it's getting baled, check the row!!!!! You want it just wider than the bale for perfect square edges and most bales per hour. Faster pto will make the row narrower and denser in the middle. Better have rows with square edges and slightly less in the middle then the outside for best baling

Good luck with the new machine, grease it every day, wash it at the end of the season, chuck some oil over it, and check the tyre pressures before arriving at the field with one of the buggers flat (yeah, that last bit of advice is through bitter experience 🤡🤣)

This,
important bit

Trust me your advice had nothing to do with it!! It was the finance package that my dealer gave me it worked out better than Kuhn!!
It would take more than a finance package to sway me to a Fella rake, actually I don’t bother getting finance on rakes , tenders or mowers , just get the best deal possible cash up front works very well.

I'm looking at changing my Kuhn 7301. I've owned it 10 years and it was 10 years old when I bought it. It's done 4/500 ac completely faultlessly.

I'm getting prices on Kuhn, Claas and Krone.

What are McHale rakes like?

Sorry to bump this, but I'm after a twin rotor rake. Will be fine heavy cuts of haylage and hay. For circa 400ac a year, so 600ac of "work". Large, flat fields with occasional flints. Simple to set up, easy to maintain in-house. Not made of spit and sawdust.

We are very happy with our Massey rake but only used for about 1000 acres so far so early days!!

We changed a Kuhn 6501 to Pottinger 702(?) last year. Pleased with Pottinger so far. Two dealers both said they would not sell Pottinger 6xx model as they gave trouble.
Why change from Kuhn?-
Did not like angle pto shaft was at.
Often was a metallic bang when put into gear. Probably overrun clutch but it sounded painful.
Bogey wheel adjustment was limited and the lever was down near wheels, so difficult to get at.
Manual adjustment of width
Greasing 3x pto shafts with wide angle joints was a major pain. Easiest way was to slide end of shaft off but it was nigh impossible to get your hand inside the fixed outer guard.
Having said that it never required any parts other than tines, and that I blame on one operator trying to scarify the ground.
The Pottinger does not rattle as much when working and seems stronger built. Are the gearboxes, cams etc as good? I don't know. Time will tell.
