Stores will ease abit once the grazing men have bought what they need, i cant see the strong cattle easing and will probably get scarce and dearer when the spring sales ease

I don’t think they will...barley getting very expensive and deadweight dropping.
I think the peak has been reached
Maybe but feeding men dont like empty sheds and they have had some great returns lately, average age of the cattle on offer in the markets has dropped lately and 90-120 day feeding cattle are in short supply

I'm at a point where I can leave them alone till august if I want, Barley is very hard to find let alone buy it, lots of young small stores about as usual for this time of year, be plenty about in August and September with more size and hopefully I have store full of barley as well. Stores have been a bit easier in certain places for the last couple of weeks.

Main feeding men produce nearly all of there ration themselves apart from protein, and are set up to feed 365 days of the year. For example i have two mates who finish cattle, ones home grown ration is under £200/t and the others bought in one isnt far from £300/t. One is moaning he cant compete for cattle and cant work out how they others make it pay! Doesnt take much working out.
Every herd of sucklers thats sold is making room for a finishing unit too!

Beef price will have to drop 50+ppk before cattle get cheap

What happens when macdougall rings you to say he has no buyers will you be easily persuaded to change your mind

It can drop faster than it went up, I would not be at all surprised to see it back to £3.50/kg
Yep, eased 5p already, got to book a couple weeks in advance, another excuse to drop it further. All those expensive stores on 200 quid barley won't look so good. The big finishers will need their perks from the abbatoir to make it look good. The rest of us will just have to lump it.
I've pushed them like hell on barley bought at £120/t to get them out now at 20 months and boy I'm glad.

The only way to make feeding cattle pay is to produce all or most of the feed yourself, there was a time when byproducts could be bought cheaper than a homegrown ration but not now.
Normally do that, but with the shocking wheat yields/ failure last year I had to sell 150tonne of barley in November to balance the books. Got to buy another 20t this week (will make it 60 tonne purchased) but I’m hoping, with most of my cattle ready to go imminently, that I won’t have to buy much more before harvest
