Paying farmers a lump sum to retire

Average farmer could get 50k with the largest landowners getting 100k
Average farmer gets 21k per year

"Older farmers are often most resistant to new "green" methods, and Environment Secretary George Eustice wants them to move on"

"The government believes that younger farmers will be more open to new nature-friendly ideas and more inclined to seek income by diversifying into businesses such as camping or glamping."

Basically old farmer produce food for a living, whereas young farmers have to subsidise the food side of the business with a diversification. Why even bother with food production?

Slightly off topic, but what has the photo and caption stating greenhouse gas emissions got to do with retirement? Classic bbc sniping

Still very little in the way of details, hopefully the consultation published today will have more. It says 'older farmers,' does this mean it will be age restricted? Says average BPS claim is 20k and average payout could be 50k so does this mean 2.5 X bps limited to 100k? Not sure if that will be enough to convince many to retire.

Surely the only ‘old farmers‘ who would take the money would be going to give up anyway?

A lot want to ‘die with their boots on’.

Another thing is if they didn’t have to farm they would have to spend more time with the wife...... :nailbiting: :ROFLMAO:

Edit.Or husband.... :bag:
200 acre farm @£8000/ac
House @£350,000
£2,000,000 in asset value but will sell it up for £50k lump sum?

Or is it just to stop farming the land themselves?

I can see it now... farmer retires and takes his 100k pay out... then rents his farm too a keen young farmer who hasn’t got a clue what he’s getting in for... the farmer then Carry’s on running his farm with the young lad being just a worker and on paper everything looks grand

I’d actually disagree with what the government are thinking.

Older farmers tend to farm less intensively and care for their farm by letting it go a bit.

Gov obviously doesn‘t want to encourage food production so what’s the big deal with a bunch of geriatrics running the place.

It would allow younger farmers to get a ‘proper job’ which actually has prospects.

As a skeptic I think the government can see hard times coming for some when subs are gone. I think they are covering themselves so they can say "Well we offered you a way out you didn't take it. Now you're broke it's not our problem."

So I take the payment .....do I have to sell my farm ....can I rent it out for more income .....
If the payout is based on area payments which we have had then it's no good to me as 3 of the farms I rent I don't get any area payments on .....I only claim on ground I own

Yep
I would think the same, farms farmed by older farmers are more environmentally friendly places.
Seems like they want yonger people to keep producing food but subsidise it themselves through diversification so the gov don't have to subsidise it
