Don’t know anyone who can afford to just let sheep die. I got $250 a head for my old ewes last year.
But it happened somewhere to someone's uncle's brother's sister's dad's sheep

so it must be true
Flies make a mess of ears here round tags, it can only be worse over there
Most calves here will be tagged at marking time (weaning) otherwise they lose tags from their little soft lugs and need retagged anyway.

The number of matagouri bushes and chain-mesh gates with eid tags is incredible, start a good cheap herd of them but they just don't seem to get fat ever

doing them in the autumn means less heat and blood and flies

Best not to tag at all

I agree. We have to use RFID but generally that's the week before their first tb test, their ear is tougher then and it saves them ripping out - few things look worse than a cow with a ripped ear or having to tag the wrong side

I really don't give a hoot what the rulebook says, if you hadn't guessed. I can understand why folk would dock lambs but it doesn't mean we do, and a lot of other things people do we don't do - like putting deadstock in a pit, what a waste of nutrients

Traceability is bullshyte
Try tracing mince?

"which bit made me crook, so I can ream the farmer for the cook not cooking it properly"

it's all shyte, labelling is what replaced the consumer knowing the farmer. It's merely an extension of that, along with a lot of the regulations - just replacing relationships and trust through the chain

hence as a kinda regenerative type of guy, we don't enter into any of that crap along the lines of standards and certifications, if people are seeking us out then our brand is working OK

We really need to stop being scared of the big bad world, this is what being trapped in a protectionist racket has done to our self esteem.

NFU seem stuck in the past with a few old timers thinking they know best
You would put your faith in Truss, Kwarteng and co?
