Anyone else done calves on powder to 13-15 weeks? Find their a hell of a lot better on longer, 2 litre twice a day from start to finish and find it does them seriously well!
Depends what your rearing them for, if your selling them as weanlings you need to do them a hell of of lot better than if your keeping them to graze on imo. Used to buy calves in early october and work on having them weaned by christmas once upon a time, they were kept for bulling or fattening

Yeah we used to buy in mid September, wean before Christmas and outside before March, sold at 12 months after annual TB test, last few times we tried that even with 4-6 calves from the mart we ended up trace TB testing every few months until we sold them 🤦🏻‍♂️

Everybody that buys in any type of cattle gets trace test letters at some point, i dont mind them as long as the cattle pass!

I've never kept them on that long as a rule, the other year when we had it proper cold and nasty in January I had a bunch that were ready too wean at 10 weeks but it was that cold I didn't dare change the diet so they got it until 12 weeks. I must admit they looked well! Mine are usually on 3/4 litres each end of the day from weeks 4-8 then start winding it back too wean at 10. 95% bull calves for barley beef so I want them to grow like hell all the way through.

When I was young(er) and fresh out of college I thought I'd show the old fella how too rear calves the modern way. Bought 16 bull calves, split into 2 eights and did one bunch the old way and they others weaned at 6 weeks as soon as they were eating enough calf starter, followed the milk mixing advice too the letter so as too be super efficient and save ££££ per animal. Then ad lib them straight through to finishing as normal. That was a sharp lesson too learn. Got too 16 weeks and my calves were noticeably smaller and rougher than the ones reared the way we always had. So we carried on rearing in the old method. As it happened it took an extra 4-6 weeks at the other end too get mine away finished. Didn't bother trying that again! Grandad said we all have too try these ideas when we are young. There's something wrong with you if you dont want too try new methods. Some of them are well worth the change. This one wasnt!!

What would well reared dairy bred 8 month old Lim,Angus,BBx be making ?
Around £650-£725 for good ones. Some plainer smaller sorts £480+. There could of been some sold in the stirk section before the stores but I never saw those sold. BB's always make more there as 1 man just can't stop himself from buying them and others around the ring help him do it!! 😂
