Bought 5 Charollais bulls at borderway mart at the British Charollais spring show and sale on the 15th of may. One of which came with a vet certificate of fertility.. Ideal sensible vendor. The other four did not. Two of these bulls came from the same vendor and before purchase I spoke to them and said I would fertility test them once home will he stand by them.?. His response 110%. Had them home that day and 9 days later had the vet check them. On of the two has 0% live sperm and sample full of Pus.
Got on to the mart... Speak to the vendor.. spoke to the vendor... Put him with six cows for three cycles and if he fails to get one in calf then we can talk. .. absolute joke who's got six cows they want to knowingly put with a bull that fires blanks for 9weeks?.lost count of how many times he told me he was standing by him 110%. My fault I guess for taking a man at his word.

Bad job, i would be sending the market and the society a copy of the vet report . They might pressure/shame the vendor into action

Doesn't look like there was any need for fertility tests pre-sale but a bull is only needed for one purpose. If he is only producing pus cells I would worry about underlying infection.
I agree that you may end up with 6 cows not in calf or even worse 2 in calf and a sub-fertile bull.
Get back to H&H with his response.

It would be just nine weeks lost, you'd have to wait another 6 for the vet to pd them accurately. How old are the bulls?

Or pay the difference after its culled, they might saddle some other poor sod with it if its sent back
We bought a sim bull similar situation last year.lad bought it, had it semen sampled came back inconclusive.so the boy sent it back.I gave it a go all 15 cows in calf 13 first time round.

The puss found in the OP's results though is a more worrying factor.

If the cows proved to be empty, shouldn't the vendor pay for that cost as well as it was done on his advice? He is suggesting this as a test of fertility rather than taking the bull back, so his shout surely? But for god sake get what is agreed in writing, preferably drawn up by a solicitor! And, yes, the vendor should be made liable for consequential losses re:the pus. Put that in the agreement too! He may decide taking the bull back is the cheaper option.

How much did you pay for the bull?
This sounds typical of those trusty pedigree breeders. The rules will probably state he must be capable of getting a percentage in calf by natural service. However you told him that you would be semen testing him, drop him back in the pens at borderway, I would imagine they will just reread the rules and not be very helpful.

If I wanted to buy a bull by conformation and looks I could choose lots of commercial cattle but when it is at a pedigree sale I expect that the parentage is correct, date of birth accurate and it will produce calves. That is why we pay £2000 more than for a store beast with similar feed costs.
Like buying a BMW to find a Ford badge underneath and no fuel tank.

Is there a major sale anywhere of non-pedigree bulls. Maybe one or two at local marts, sometimes lucky to get a reasonable bid, but nowhere near the choice you get at pedigree sales.

The trick is; never trust a pedigree breeder, so you won't be disappointed. And if you can't get a replacement for a dud bull, he will make £1300 fat, which will go towards buying another from a different breeder. And save yourself the hassle and veterinary bills of making a formal complaint.

Just so I understand you correctly, you're suggesting not pursuing the original breeder for selling a bull which can't breed?

Yes. If the breeder is uncooperative, it usually costs too much in time and money.

The alternative is to send the boys round with a baseball bat........................................................................ and to challenge him to a game of rounders.
