Small farmers - 100ish acres

Hi Guys,

Partners dad, a farmer, suggested that we get both a small-ish tractor and a handler for the jobs around the farm. More than likely get a JD6320 and then something like the handler in the link below:

Just wondering what people think of that plan and of a handler with 7k hours or so. Probs wont be doing any major work, just odd jobs around the farm, mucking out etc. Maybe a few hundred hours a year.

Any suggestions/ advice welcome.

I think if you can justify that sort of kit on 100 acres livestock you are doing better than most. I would have thought a tractor with a loader more than adequate.

I suspect that fil is fed up with you borrowing his equipment. Best to be independent.

1 70/80 hp tractor 4x4 would be more than man enough for a farm that size. Just for back up I would have a 50/60 up 2 wheel drive if you think you need it. I've got a 74 hp 4x4 with loader and that can do most things on the farm. About the only thing I have it can't do/use is the 4 leg decompacter.

What do you mean, "I would have a 50/60 up 2 wheel drive if you think you need it." 70/80 hp or 50/60?

Tbh the 70/80 hp 5075/5080s are more than a 2005 jd6320 so get more bargain for your buck and less to go wrong no?

To be clear I think both machines are great. All I said was that i was impressed/amazed that anyone could justify £45K on kit on a 100ac livestock farm. Good luck to you. I couldn't.

It doesn't really matter if you can justify it to those around, or on here. Can you afford it?

I'm a one man band on 320ac, but I have a 2002 JD tractor and a 2008 Merlo telehandler. Both will likely/hopefully see me out here. Having driven them for 35 years, I certainly wouldn't like to be without a telehandler. Their versatility replaces an extra pair of hands for a lot of jobs, and having both means that I can load fert spreaders, trailers, etc easily.

If you get a telehandler (or tractor to an extent) with high hours, then be prepared for some big bills sometime, and just hope they don't arise.

Bag lifter?
good idea.
one of the most cost effective tools ive ever bought. will lift a metre or more higher than the fore end loader with the telescope and...safer to use for this job ir .
also use it for seed corn filling as thats my 'drill' also..:sneaky:

he gets split from the spreader sometimes for other od jobs and then its possible to pull a trailer behind the tractor with it on .
zero running costs.
