The problem with most of these certification schemes is that eventually they never are truly voluntary. They are designed to evolve become "the standard" which has to be met in order to sell your produce and before you know it, your business ends up being run by other people.

A strong union should be fighting against such schemes, not dreaming them up.

I was reading it that if you’re assured then you are less likely to get a cross compliance or other SFP inspection as DEFRA can see what standards you are already being assessed for?
And as I've said before this made up b0l1ocks to try and justify red tractor in some small way. Assured here and have had 3 full inspections one ear tags only and one trading standards in about ten years. So about one inspection ever 2 years.

A license to farm is sadly the path we are all being led down.
I'm in waste management - I have a waste management license
I'm in Haulage - I have a Haulage license
These two mentioned bring value to the table i.e. I can't make money in these industries without these licenses.

A license to farm will bring me NO VALUE whatsoever to my farm.. I just know it, if they can guarantee some value to it then bring it on, whatever. But it won't happen.
They are going to suck the life out of every farmer with more and more BS.

Our predecessors here were evicted by the war ag for failing to farm productively. This was 8 years after the war had ended when there were still shortages. It wasn’t that you needed a licence to farm but if you fell short you soon knew about it. I think the evictions at that time instilled a fair determination in people here not to make a mess of it, something that persists to this day.
What worries me is that what would be considered a mess back in those days would probably now be considered an environmental focus area and that nowadays you are more likely to be hauled over the coals for running a tidy farm than a rough one. It worries me that modern “policing” of farms could be very subjective and open to pressure from whatever lobby groups.

I can see all sorts of possible problems if we go much further down the route of RT appointing itself the head of U.K. Agriculture. If there is low uptake of ELMS I can see it becoming a compulsory element of RT and as we can’t to all intents and purposes sell anything without being members of RT then they really can force us to whatever their political masters want us to do, which being grocery industry lead doesn’t bode well at all. It’s just a ticking bomb really. Production should never have got into bed with retail. There should be red lines drawn up and a body that independently stands up for the producer. It’s just no good at all having the job run by the grocery trade and their political chums.

The whole thing reminds me of a description of the crusades as explained by my old history teacher. Basically a bunch of hardcases set off for Jerusalem to put right what they thought were wrong things going on there. When they got there they couldn’t actually find a problem …… so they killed them all anyway.
