Bracken!!

Good evening.

In light of Asulam only being available in IBC Qty and controlled heavily, and the fact that I do not wish to eradicate everything around and entwined in the bracken that seems to like growing around our area - what options are left available to help kill it off the bracken?
I can mow the areas edging into the paddocks that grows, but I'm stumped for what grows in the hedges?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can use glyphosate carefully making sure you only spray the bracken.

Both weed wiper with Glysophate or a bracken roller work well, often better than asulux which is very limited as to when you can use it to get good results

Not a cheap fix at £140 a hectare.
was it the same rate when used for docks ?

I had read that could be used, but drift would be my worry in the hedge area, so would need a good wiper /shroud to be comfortable to use glyphosate.
Will look at options - possibly have to frankenstein something.

I expect your usual farm spray supplier would have a better price than that but seem to remember you have to order it well before it's needed,they can't just keep it in stock

You can buy small handheld wipers which hold the chemical in the handle quite cheaply.

I seem to remember that Squire Ultra is being tested for bracken control, but it’s not on the label yet. It might be another option worth looking in to though, especially given the price and difficulty in getting hold of Asulox?

Glypo and a weedwiper is the business for bracken on open ground

In and around hedges, careful use of knapsack and glypo is good.
MCPA will also work over a number of years

What's the regime with mcpa? Does it it weaken it every time it's treated like cutting?. Lot of steeply dangerous ground here that,if cut a couple of times a year thins the fern out but if weather ground gets wet and a cutting gets missed you're back to square one. Could spray with the quad though

Sounds better if you say £60/acre! I can't remember for definite but half that for docks may be correct.
Actually, I don't view 60 as being expensive as I am creating grassland out of nothing. If your neighbour offered you a next door field for 60/acre, what would you say?

Yes spray every year for a number of years, thins it right out, as well as the thistles, broadleaves and brambles that try to colonise as the bracken thins.

Does take a annual dose over a number of years though and the ground needs to be the short of ground that you can keep the sprayer booms above the bracken
