Uprights for 60 foot clear span

I’m hoping some of you can help me out. I’m erecting a 60 foot wide clear span shed, with one side coming down onto a slatted tank wall. When putting in the tank I was told I could use 6x6 columns (I presume quite heavy ones) as uprights, and therefore didn’t need to create piers on the outside of the tank (with the slats in place there is only 6” of concrete left to mount the uprights on.)

This may well be true, but it sounds a little light. I don’t know what the intended steel would be for the span - maybe 12x6 H irons?

Another shed maker that I spoke to rose an eyebrow at the thought of 6x6 columns being used for the uprights at 60’ span and suggested a 12x6 that is set side on to the tank.

So my questions is as follows: has anyone had a shed put up recently with a 60’ span, and if so, what dimensions were the uprights? Additionally, has anyone mounted an upright on the side of a concrete tank that was broader than the mount and how was this done?

I’m no expert but 6x6 no way ! @BobGreen will know .

I agree with @Hilly no way would I be using 6x6 even if it was a heavy section.

Sounds like you need to seek some advice from a structural engineer. & not the guy who suggested 6 x 6.

Need to be 305*165*40 as a minimum and onto foundations outside of wall. As @upnortheast says get structural engineer on the case

My last 60 ft wide shed which is 14 ft to eaves is 356 x 170(??) odd, round here wouldn't go less. Needs proper gussets and bracing plates as well.

would you not be one for mounting onto the top of a tank?

Steel gets specked bigger and bigger as years roll
On , 6x6 probably would have been ok in the 40s and more tha likely still standing lol but not with today’s steel.

You said you only had 6” wall available to bolt onto
A 6” or 8” column is a lot heavier gauge than a UB but you’ll need engineer calcs to determine

Grain store here to go up and it’s 60 ftspan 23 high and columns are 530mm by 210 or 21”x 8 1/4

Fixing a wider UB section to the top of the tank even if you only have 6” to bear on will be ok. Eaves height will have an impact on the column section required but as mentioned it is likely to be something like a 305x146. Ideally you have holding down bolts cast in the wall? If not it will have to resin anchors. I think I have a picture on my phone somewhere which I’ll post

I appreciate all of the responses. I have solved the problem in a round about way as I’ve only gone and bought myself a second hand steel frame with a 90 foot span. No need for mounting on the wall as I’ll just be covering the yard in front of the shed and incorporating it into a lie back. I’m not looking forward to the additional cost of fibre cement and timber, but I’m very much looking forward to the flexibility of such a large space.
