Well did you read about that accident involving round bales of straw not being strapped down and one came off and has left a bike rider with life changing injury's?

Do not think saying you do not strap down loads is a good idea tbh.

I dont strap down hay as it sits better and is heavier...straw bales ae a lot lighter and tend to bounce around....possible i should think of strapping hay

Anyway sales by the acre look cheaper than last year

If your going on anything wide enough for two
vehicles to pass you'd be wise to put a few straps on.

Just having a laugh with you, I said I didn't strap down I didn't say that I didn't secure the load

In theory it would be cheaper per ton, but i meant more the fact there appears to be plenty of straw out there so no need for people to go crazy...but that never seems to happen at the GTH sale. Some people seem to forget the risk involved in buying behind the combine instead of off a lorry.

Price of straw last year you needed one of these if leaving a trailer for too long

Buying off the lorry looks a LOT cheaper than last year and in some cases buying per the acre this year going by tonight's sale !!

Delivered in barley made £90-98 ton
Delivered in Wheat £84 to £88 ton..

And Comm has to be taken off the above as well so buying direct you are talking £85 for Wheat and £95 ton for Barley delivered in this year!

As for the standing straw sale, a very strange sale with prices being all over the place, a few lots unsold, location was key and not the amount of straw standing in the field!

For example lots 3-6 of Winter Wheat made between £75 to £100 acre, it will yield about a ton an acre!

Lot 104 will yield about 1.5 ton acre, it made £125 acre ( winter wheat ) and on top of the price it is full of blackgrass!

Top Wheat was about £140/142, another field of barley made £145 acre.

One well known straw dealer was bidding away and bought at least one lot of Winter wheat at £102 acre.

Genuine bids on that lot, the vendor was in the room, will be a good piece of barley but unless you are small baling it and then selling them for £4 bale or you need small bales for your chicken contract i cannot see how anyone can justify paying that for Winter Barley straw this year.

Like you said, all over the place. One lot only made £60 & will likely be around 1.5t/acre. Also one of the delivered loads was knocked down to a contractor who also sells straw.

Straw seems a bit like the live weight dead weight argument ,standing straw auctions been likened to live weight as it's a gamble knowing what you are going to get but drives up the ton rate when theres a shortage and vice versa when theres a glut ,buying by the bale can be likened to deadweight as the end purchaser knows exactly what they are getting
