MOT's and Main Dealers

main dealer con.... oh your disks and pads are “x” percentage worn, and people are fooled into replacing them sooner without thinking that it’s probably taken 30k miles to do that over the space of a few years!

How else do they pay the rents for their showrooms!?

Was in the main LR dealer last week getting my free service, counted 14 staff in shiny suits plus 2 receptionists. Who the hell pays their wages, let alone the acres of polished floors and fake plastic hedges outside.

its almost vulgar but plenty in their giving their cars a dealer fix!

The likes of Quick-Fit are the worst offenders. A daughter took her car in for tracking, next thing you know, the manager on the phone and wants to 'impound' the car on safety grounds, needs discs and pads and not safe to drive etc. Absolute rubbish, and really worried her. The car had a recent MOT and I had looked at the pads and discs along with other stuff before it went for MOT. I went to the garage but the manager had gone to lunch, so I drove the car home, no costs were mentioned. Had the tracking done elsewhere and used them ever since.
Seems if you are female, polite or not car savvy, you are rich pickings for [some] of the garage world.
BTW: My take on brake wear is, most cars are faster, heavier and braking systems more efficient, hence more frequent brake service is required, but NOT to the extent of scaring folks about it.

I use an independent Volvo specialist for my XC 70. So far and 110000 miles later I have been very satisfied with their service and costs. The last service I asked for change of the auto trans’ oil and rear diff. That was expensive but well worth it. Very happy so far

My wife left her astra at national tyres for a pair on the front. She phoned me in a panic because they'd called her at work to say it also needed discs and pads and two new rear shocks and if she wanted it back same day they needed a quick answer to get it done. I drove in there and asked to be shown all the problems, nothing needed at all. I told the manager to fit the tyres free of charge or I was getting trading standards involved and he did. A$$holes

I think it’s the case that a lot of these places need their backsides covering in an event of an accident, so that they can’t be sued. Took a car in for two new tyres, and came out with a list of things that “needed” to be done to it, none of which had been pointed out by the MOT a month or about 1,000 miles prior.

Yep I had to take discovery 3 to main dealers in town, could t believe the money spent on the outfit, coffee machines fake trees , severs nuggets behind the counter. Round the back a pile of rr’s in to be fixed :)

That changed years ago, gearboxes are expensive and brakes are cheap, so changing down isnt advised, just gently brake to a stop.
I have driven several million miles in my 53 years driving, and never had a gear box issue, forgetting losing second on a disco , but that was a known fault and sorted free of charge.
Until I had an automatic 15 years now, I had very rarely changed pads either. Sadly with Autos you do need to use your brakes far more.

Our disco 5 went into main dealer today for a 4 year old service and mot. It has a service plan so that wasn’t to pay for so a cost of £50 for mot and it passed no problems. However they said the front pads and discs were 90% worn and would swap them for a mere £750, my wife said it’s too expensive and we would do it locally and then the price dropped to £600…..but still aim to get them done locally.

I took the car to my faithful old garage that have always specialised in Volvo's this morning. They use Volvo parts unless you want a really cheap job.
They changed the pads and redid the MOT. all for less than £200.00 (Main dealer almost £350!!). They told me there was nothing wrong with the discs at all and this is a common trick to get uninformed people to pay significantly more money. My concern is that the MOT tester actually put this on the test certificate as an advisory to be changed, which is why I have a concern over the in house MOT tests!!

I always have a principle with garages that service vehicles that if the wearing parts won't last until the next service then replace them. It is normally always cheaper to have this done during a service especially if the wheels have to be taken off. The service interval on this car is over 12k miles and it had only done less than 5k when the pads were worn out, they must have been very low at the previous service.
The mot advisory is actually just to cover the testers back in most cases. I've seen the same advisory 4 mots on the trot. For example with rear brake discs it's often noted the are lightly pitted with rust. Not a fail but could be in 3 months time but putting it down as an advisory covers the tester if the worst happens.

You and me were taught to use the engine and gearbox to break. So we slow up before a junction. Today they are taught to go full tilt into junction and use brakes to slow down.
I was amused to see friends new serious electric car has brembo brakes. Did not like to ask why, since surely the braking will come from the motor in reverse charge.
Have just changed to an automatic box and find it is only in the right gear after exiting a corner not on entry as I am in the habit of doing. Most annoying.

Other half took our Subaru Legacy into Kwik fit some years ago and rang me in a panic after they told her it needed discs and pads all round so I had to pay them a visit. I had only put new ones on a couple of days before, funny how it passed its MoT there and then with no charge.
A mate took his Disco II into National tyres and they pushed him to put discs, pads and calipers on the front. It was in for a couple of days and when he picked it up he paid, drove out up to the next junction and had no brakes. The eejits had put the calipers on the wrong sides which meant the bleeds were the wrong way up and couldn't be bled properly.
Tyre companies should stick to selling tyres

Used to do my own servicing, doing 20K a year, pads lasted a year at least, perhaps discs 40K. I would use OEM parts, never had any trouble with them. When we moved to Shropshire, the local garages did the servicing, pads were lasting 10K max or even 5K according to the service sheet. I've had backing plates come away from the pads, which I've never had before in 100K's of driving. Now according to the suppliers, a well known Shropshire company for importing cheap and nasty Land Rover parts, this is my fault for not using the car every day. Must get out more often.

Independants can do most of the repairs a main dealer can do
the electronic diagnostics are available to all independents

I always now use an independent once out of warranty period

brake pad and disc replacement is also a straight forward simple job

They do take a bit of getting used to, my wife hated it until her hip gave her issues with a clutch, having learnt to drive it properly she would never go back, even with a new hip.
Kick down coming in to the corner to change the gear down as you approach the bend.
The only issue I have is reversing out of the garage, why did they make it so you push the stick forward to go back? Makes it worse being used to driving tractors where it is the sensible way!

Have not useda main dealer for years after the thieving so and so’s tried to sell me 3 new tyres at double retail price when all I actually needed was 1 puncture repaired according to my own tyre man.
Also a reason I drive BMW now rather than Landrover.
