Sorry if done before but what are people using, looking for ideas,
currently using Plastic sheep troughs, which are fine provided the cattle don't knock them about, which one bunch have decided to do, thinking of a metal frame to sit the trough in that I can tow with the quad bike, pic's please Thanks (y)
Ps don't think I have enough pressure for kiwi tech one's_(spring supply).:scratchhead:

This is probably my best one, it's a Wilson Plastics (NZ) made one, with a Jobe Megaflow valve and fed with 20mm.

It's bullproof, but too heavy to easily hump up onto a vehicle. Tows great on grass though.
I also have this one
20190826_221102.jpg

...which is much lighter - but also not all bullproof: see the galvanised bits.

It's still a handy double-up trough simply because I can deploy it so easily. Both use 25mm valves and fittings, but I reduce them down to take a 20mm pipe as that's all my existing system will flow.

I am having a rehash of our water scheme but this does for now - I just have a few 100m lengths of pipe here and there which I just hump around a certain area.
Quite often I leapfrog the two around if it's going to be the lad shifting them, as he just can't quite tip the Wilson one yet ??

Does it need to be badger proof?

If it doesn't, I think the 100lt kiwitech tub should be fine because it has a high flow valve/ball cock.

Think it's the micros that need abit of pressure.

Hopefully should have both here in the next couple weeks if you want a look

Yeah love to have a look when your kitted up, no doesn't need to be badger proof, (I'm that confident:whistle:)

I've seen homemade troughs made from 200 litre plastic drums on their side, with a window cut out for the stock to drink through. The other end contains the ballcock and protects it, however IME it's the connection to the pipe that gets the hiding, not so much the trough.
They're generally mounted on a sled of either timber or tubing.

Anyone have more photos. The idea of a lorry wheel with a steel plate on the base and a value regular sounds good. Not to heavy and the base should help it slids

@Kiwi Pete what type of fittings do you use on the pipe to connect and disconnect the troughs.

If I made a mobile trough like what you describe from a 200 litre plastic barrel and put a sleigh type frame around it, would it be a help to wrap the pipe around it once or twice to take the strain of the connection between the pipe and barrel.

Yes, I generally do a sort of clove-hitch of pipe around the trough to help prevent the pipe getting pulled off the fitting

I just use normal ID low density fittings, we get Anka ones as they're easier to do up without tools

We have Philmac fittings here, I think they're Australian and look similarto the Anka ones.

Would you have any photos of the 200 litre troughs you seen with the sled

Im quite pleased with our effort, I though it would be better to turn the tyre inside out, it was quite a workout to flip. Easy to empty by standing on the side to get rid of most of it, and tow it with a small length of chain. The base is stockboard bolted with 8 coach bolts and sealed with some gutter butyl stuff, leaks slightly sometimes, but compared to what the cows slop about, its fine if it moves daily. Megaflo valve seems to cope with spring water pressure. Im surprised by how much the pipe fittings can cope with, pictured is a bit of a temporary bodge left over from last year, but none of the six connections let go.
