Cheviot Mule vs NofE Mule

An estate I help with the sheep on buys 530 NCM (as well as Scotch form Castle Douglass) of the same size sheep from Tow Law, Lazonby 1st, Lazonby 2nd, Skipton and off one farm. By far the best are the Tow Law 530, they have real power and even some shape, lazonby seem to be far to narrow and skipton ones never grow on as well as you think.

Does Tow Law still have a Mule sale? I think the only thing it's still famous for is that it once hosted Arsenal in a football match.

I'm trying to remember the name of the farm manager (Harry ????) who came up each year and bought an artic load of mules at extreme rates for his boss on an estate in Hampshire - and pocketed a huge amount of luck.

Held at Hexham now. Middle of September. Trevor Simpson and Drew Patrick sold them last year. Give them a call they’ll help you. Mind we don’t want too many of you turning up! They’ve been relatively easily bought this last year or so.

Chris Waddle used to play football for Tow Law Town before Newcastle signed him up.

I've always fancied a few cheviot mules and, after years of only running NofE mules, I've finally persuaded management (my mum) to have a trip to Longtown this year and try a few. I've been doing a bit of reading however, and found a few people saying they struggle to get cheviot mules to rear a good set of twins well? We're lowland farm so not a tough place for any sheep, but wondered how others had found them?
They are a poor kind of Half Bred.Just go to St Boswells first Thursday in September and buy some of those instead. They will do you much better. If you tup them with a good Suffolk, you can take the ewe lambs back there next year and get your money back.:)

Yeah, that’s why half breds have died down too 1 sale a year and CM’s have 6/7 advertised ewe lamb sales… 😉😁

Interesting to read the views about the trade for CM’s at Longtown….Linked to the price of NEM’s out of Hexham…..
Longtowns trade for CM’s has pretty well mirrored the decline in the NEM trade at Hexham.
A lot to do with the pursuit of Bonny Heids and ignoring the basic reason for the NEM’s existence.
A Sound ,Thrifty, Milky ewe that will produce two decent lambs and feed them with the minimum amount of care.
Plus as an aged cull had a reasonable value.
The NEM in the North of England took over from Half Bred ewes (BL X CHEVIOT) for precisely the expert breeders reasons the NEM is now falling by the wayside….HB Breeders became obsessed with big sticky up lugs and as thick white hair as you could manage….NEM breeders have become obsessed with Big Sticky up lugs and Bonny Heid Markings totally ignoring the basics.
Go to the canteen at St Boswells and look at the pictures of penned HB ewe lambs at the mart as far as the eye could see….
Seen many pens of HB Ewe lambs lately?
Victims of the Showring and the Tup breeders Merry go Round…(You buy mine and I will buy yours)..
Pretty obvious that the CM trade at Longtown is a classic case of demand exceeding supply with the opposite being the case with NEM’s.
For those seeking a further cross from the CM there are usually a decent but limited selection of Texel X ewe lambs out of CM’s at Longtown…but again demand is pretty strong for them.
