Cars overtaking while waiting to turn right

We farm in a busy built up area it's a constant issue especially turning into one of our yards, its 100 metres after a roundabout and it happens at least once a week even though as soon as I'm past the island I pull over the white line to block the road they still try and squeeze past.

If you position your front tractor wheel directly ontop of the white line it really should be obvious where you are going (If the road is actually wide enogh to have a white line)
I straddle the white line nowadays when turning right into the farmyard so that vehicles can't physically overtake. Only thing you have to watch for is motorcyclists who will still insist on overtaking the 5 cars behind you and squeezing past

Been happening for years

I have had it several time in my car when turning right in the village have to pullover to the left to see is there is oncoming car on the narrow road

many drivers in too much of a hurry

when turning right all drivers should check for the idiot over taking you may be in the right but the inconveniance of an accident can be considerable

I think a lot of people think that if a tractor is indicating right and there is no obvious junction, then it means “it’s safe to overtake”.
Many farm or field entrances are concealed and folk just don’t expect the right the right turn.
I am thinking of having the words “I’m turning right” put up in lights on the back of my trailer and also a load recorded message to make it clear.
I also straddle the white line or even drive on the wrong side well in advance (if no oncoming) to stop people overtaking when I’m turning. Lots then undertake.

The general standard of driving you see on the roads is absolutely shocking. I watched in awe a couple of days ago as a six-wheeler Irn-Bru delivery lorry sat behind a cyclist on a 500 yard straight then overtook him on a blind S-bend. A couple of days later, I watched someone initiate an overtake on a long straight with a stream of oncoming traffic. Car they were passing and two coming the other way had to slam on the brakes. Barsteward clearly banked on the other drivers yielding rather than causing an accident.

Getting back to the OP, our yard entrance is requires a right hand turn right at the start of a 300 yard straight, so this is an almost daily issue for us. I always position myself in the middle of the road to make overtaking impossible. Had one near miss where I saw him start the overtake and turned my wheel a fraction anyway. He looked very sheepish indeed and gave me a nervous wave.

Seems like we are all seeing the same thing. Tank has a led warning becon in the middle at the top which i was told to keep on all the time. Just wonder sometimes if these Amber light flashing all the time only distract from indicators. Been in situations myself behind highway maintenence vehicles that were covered in warning lights and you would nearly miss the indicator when he put it on.

Big sign turning right would be good. Not so handy when you had to go all the way over the right hand lane to then come back across to your left to get in a gate on that side. Thats rant for another day 🤣

Another vote for straddling the white line but from 50 yards before the junction, just so the terminally stupid aren’t tempted to fit an 8 foot car through a 6 foot gap.

That, and I’ve always fancied an air horn from a New York fire truck: the kind of noise you can feel in your diaphragm at quarter of a mile, and I like to think the kind of noise that would liquidise the brains of the next dumb fecker who locks up alongside my back axle…

Not always possible to straddle the white line when you need as much of the turning width as possible to get around into gateways

When turning right I not only have to check the oncoming traffic but constantly be aware that some DH overtakes.

Unfortunately I'll be called sexist but women are worst - on the school run, in a narrow country lane there's no stopping them - doesn't matter if there is no road they rally around me tractor trailer the works.

I wish I could make things safer but unless I find a way of flying 14 tonnes of grain I can't.

One morning I was tooling up a long grade in the Tranny, loaded, 3rd gear 40mph in a file of traffic. Suddenly 2 oncoming cars drove onto the wide grass verge and an instant later a large estate bullied past me. 100 yards further on he forced another off the road. 3 to 4 miles further on I found it stopped on a double white line at the top of a hill with both nearside wheels buckled after hitting the kerb. Carried on to the farm and did a days work with Dad and started back at tea time. The car was still there with a mother and 2 children sitting in it just as we had passed it that morning. I'm convinced that he was having a furious row with his wife.
