I think there is more to it than just OM. Keeps land fit and healthy then added benefit of the sheep putting the nutrition back in. We usually follow them with fodder beet which is again grazed then in with spring barley. Helps to keep grass weeds at bay.

Been pleased with mine. Done over 3t/ac and combine was saying it was doing well over 3.5t/ac in places.

Done 2/3 of our small area of winter barley. Wasn't expecting it to be ready, but then first load was 11.5% on Monday. Spun on and harrowed in on 20 October. We calibrated the combine yield meter on the first load (which was 11.5% high annoyingly as I was getting quite excited before then) and it says 7.7 t/ha. Bushel weight started at 58 until we got the combine set up properly and a bit of damp off the crop and ended up in the 63-64 range. Better than expected given its start in life and rough winter. It's due to be moved soon so will get precise weights. Had 40mm of rain in a few hours yesterday and flash flooding, so the last 10ha might be rather bedraggled.

Ours looks poor, some places in the field about 30cm tall and ripe and other rank green straw with sappy grains

Made a start on ours today , Valerie , todays field will do around 2.5 t / acre which is disappointing but tomorrows will possibly be even worse , best to come tho ,,,,,,,,, barley was always going to be disappointing tho , wheat will be a lot better

Well lets see if we can narrow it down a bit and guess the combine , if the combine is black or red/ silver it wouldn't be that ( they can't do a day without breaking down so i hear) , could be red . Anyone else care to guess ?

Interestingly a field had tulips had 700 kg Fibro then oat mustard oil radish rape mix put in , was deep loosened before sowing cover as to take out bed wheel marks
Then flailed off before drilling end sept , half field direct drill other , cultivated and combi
Yeild similar but Dd side straw was 6 inch shorter to a line , same soil rank blowing sand
Any ideas

I started our w barley yesterday evening , to bloody hot during the day and with the ac on the blink nobody fancied been the lobster in the cab !!
7 acres yielded just over 26 ton at 14 % mc and 64kph .
The remaining 20 acres of Valerie look to be doing a shade better but wont have it over a weighbridge till tomorrow
Locally many report over 4 ton and closer to 5 on fertile sites though 6 rows are coming off at poor enough kph .

Finished ours earlier today. Only got Flagon, it’s done 8.05 t/ha which is a bit disappointing compared with how it looked. I should still be pleased as that counts as top end yield on the light sand it was on. Providing it makes the grade as seed it could come to good money with the premium over a feed wheat base.
Edited to add that the 11.2% moisture this afternoon has a significant effect on yield compared to 15%, but I suppose it saves the hassle of drying it.

Worst field 2.9t/acre. Best field 3.4t/acre. Probably averaged 3.2t. Lean grains though.
4.5 bales per acre pf 4×3 hesstons, so about 1.8t straw per acre in first field. More straw in tomorrow's field, could be pushing 2t.
Shearbolt went on baler at 9pm, so called it a night. Hopefully shearbolt just got to end of its life, rather than a more sinister problem - will check it out first rhing in morning.

we lost the big yield potential in the early spring when it was very dry here, definitely dropped some tillers at the time
also had a bit of bydv first time ive seen it here in the last 10 plus years, hasn’t hit yield too much though i reckon
