^^^This.

Problem is, the boards are majority retailers/processors/trade, and minority farmers.

Think you're right that it wants half a dozen sensible farmers, and that's how it should have been set up. It wasn't set up like that, control has been lost, and who let that happen?

I can't see a way that it can ever change (under the current RT structure).

Motion/petition to have democratically elected farmer board members, 6 on a board of 10?

I can’t imagine dealing with supermarkets being a lot of fun, maybe they said they aren’t going to buy products from farmers assured by a farmer governed scheme and want their own cronies on the boards?

I see nothing to be lost, and much to gain, by putting a motion to the AGM that only primary producers may be members. Who knows, it may succeed. At the very least, it will bring the debate about who the NFU represents out into the public eye.

For anyone thinking 'Surely the NFU membership can't be that murky ?', have a read of the attached, pp 104-107.

That is even worse than the disgruntled mole in the Nfu that’s leaking info has suggested. Wow the Nfu only represents 1/5 of U.K. farmers.

So their membership is 4/5 none farming members yet they are supposedly the voice parliament listens to on behalf of U.K. agriculture.

No wonder they’ve sold the industry down the pan as they need happy village dwellers not happy food producers.

What next Nfu? No farm work between 5pm and 7am to keep villages nice and quiet?
Open access off footpaths?
Be careful what your staff know as molely is about!

There are alot of quotes from TFF in that document and we know how reliable that is for factually correct information 🙄

I’m sorry to pour cold water on your initiative but the chance of getting such a motion through at the AGM is virtually zero.
You need to understand that the AGM follows NFU Conference. The majority of those who attend the AGM are very much “on message” and will have had that message reinforced over two days at conference and a celebratory dinner.
Good luck in your Herculean task ….. but I think you may need to go about it in a different way if you want your view to prevail.

Been twice to the NFU conference when, as a younger man, I thought about attempting to climb the greasy pole.

Talk about a bun feed.

Absolutely zero chance of getting anything through that would upset that applecart. And that would especially apply to "one man, one vote" ... no, no - far better to leave it in the hands of the County delegate ..........

This is from Delilah's document which is pretty damning:

When we consider their inflated membership claims in relation to the whole UK industry we see just how
unrepresentative the NFU council actually is. There are, in fact, some 212,000 UK holdings. NFU membership is only
26% of these. The truly astounding misrepresentation is that the NFU claim the number of holdings to be the number of
farmers. The NFU’s membership is only 19% of the 294,000 registered commercial British farmers and a mere 11% of
the recorded 476,000 farming workforce. A far cry from the "more than 70% of farmers".
... What is certain is the NFU is not anywhere close to representing the two thirds of farmers it implies – less than a fifth
at best.
Sustainable food campaigns are also concerned that corporate or other associate category members – being undisclosed
– could contain powerful corporate interests such as pesticide manufacturer Syngenta. Apparently "all the main milk
processors are members of NFU, as are supermarkets.

Non farmers union.

unfortunately I think you are right but I think if NFU didn’t create someone else would have done, imagine someone like Capita or G4S in charge of it, only have to look at how often the red tractor accreditation bodies rebrand to see it’s a jungle out there.

The NFU created a monster which needs getting back under control but everybody fighting about it isn’t going to help at all, surely it wants half a dozen SENSIBLE FARMERS from each sector to sit on the board and decide the do’s and donts and start a one rule in 10 out policy and reduce.

I would have thought it would be manna from heaven to them to articulate what is actually important and regulatory obliged and what is I'm fact peacocking flim flam designed to keep a private company in the game.

Everybody fighting is exactly what needs to happen. In the case of RT the NFU policy is to totally look down their nose at farmers. You've seen it with the statements from Blenky, Guy Smith and Minetter Batters. It's sheer contempt.

This is similar to what I was told.Perhaps we need a high court injunction to prevent them using the name National Farmers Union as they clearly no longer represent them. They now represent the various bodies whom, years ago,the old NFU would be fighting tooth and nail to get a fair deal. How times change.

Too many posts to look back on so sorry if my question has already been covered . In the event of an accident or incident where legal people or even court cases are involved do you have to be a member for the legal backup from the NFU which talking to members is very good - obviously staying insured with them ?

My understanding is that your NFU Membership gives you access to the free Call Direct service, where the call handler takes your details, and someone calls back, and in my experience is usually pretty good.... You can pay a top up to your membership for additional cover I think.

Then there is the Business Legal Cover provided by the Mutual as an add-on to your Insurance cover, which is different.
