Cars overtaking while waiting to turn right

People around these parts have a special talent for tucking in behind tractors on perfectly safe straight stretches suitable for overtaking, then just as they get to the blindest, most dangerous part of the road, panicking and overtaking unsafely. Don't know it's something in the water around here or if they all just have a death wish :scratchhead:.

Generally they stay put when I'm turning right except on one notable turn in, which happens to lead to my house! It really pisses me off and if at all possible, I will start turning the wheel (won't go over the line as I am not homicidal, even if they are putting their own lives at risk). I don't know if it scares them or not, most just bog on regardless of indicators and turned front wheels (the road is arcing right, so they can see my wheels turning a mile off).

I've often wondered about that. I reckon it's them getting too close behind and finding their view is "blocked". Get to a bend and all of a sudden they get a snapshot and take a chance ? If they held back at the right distance you can do apex views, axle views all sorts . Even the biggest vehicle in front doesn't necessarily block much of your view if you are assertive and creative in your own road positioning.

I guess what seems obvious / natural to bikers and truckers is way beyond the ability of some muppets

The phenomenon of following close behind along a straight before getting enough nerve to overtake on the corner is widespread. A lot of people will hardly ever overtake anything on a trunk road as it is often too busy and have lost the skill. The other scenario is not overtaking when there is a car in the distance yet going when there is far less sight at the corner afterwards.
It is the car behind which causes the queue.

I second and third that, they stay behind on the straight and over take at the more dangerous spot.

I always keep looking in the mirror before turning right, put the indicator on and start edging over (if clear of on coming traffic) sometimes a vehicle a few cars back can’t see the indicator I think this helps a bit?

I worry more if there’s an HGV behind and really obscuring the view, would try and let them pass before I got to the spot where I want to turn.

As well as white van men, we have several US airforce service people about here, so you have to be very careful.

Funny thing with them is they hardly use an indicator on a roundabout etc, but quite often indicate going round a bend!

You're disagreeing with the Highway Code, not me.

Right of way is about who can access highways. If you mean priority then the only instance where a highway user behind has priority over someone ahead is when there's a blue flashy light involved.
Unfortunately your insurance company will pay out regardless of how you interpret the highway code, you can only turn right if they way is clear, I have the tee-shirt.

Well the flashing becon has been disconected but not made a huge difference. Several instances of cars flying past while indicating to turn right.

One time I crossed the middle line in an attempt to block them but one still decided to pass and was bouncing across the opposite verge with dirt flying everywhere.

Another decided to over take a load of cars and me and near ploughed into oncoming traffic.

Nothing to be done but watch the mirrors like a hawk and treat all other road users as imbeciles.

Agree about trying to overtake while turning right but only this morning I had one overtake me on the inside as I was turning left into a field with straw trailer, started indicating and have to pull over the other side of the white line to swing in field, as doing so a taxi driver overtook me on the inside, good job I seen him coming.

You just can't take your eyes off the mirrors when you're on the road. A few days ago I had 2 cars overtake whilst indicating right to turn into a field and then another one did the same on the following load. The indicator was definitely working, I checked it after the near misses, so is it impatience, assuming the indicator has been left on by accident or are they so focused on overtaking that they just don't see a cheeseburger style led light mounted high up on an orange tanker? No beacon on the tanker and the tractor beacons were switched off so no confusion there.

I hate it when I'm in the cattle lorry, with a full load, and someone passes, then brakes up to turn into the next road

Or they come flying up the road towards you, slam on the brakes half way past when they realise how little room they have. People don't seem to be able or willing to read the road in front of them.

Regardless of what I’m driving I always work on the principle than only 10% of other road users are aware of your ( or anyone else’s ) presence. You’ve only got to look at the expressions on the faces of the oncoming traffic to see the truth in this.

Agree yes. But when you have a que of traffic behind for a mile or 2 and you pull up to a stop with right indicators on(one high up and the other lowdown) and one pulls out about 5 cars back to overtake everyone, you have to wonder what they are thinking. I understand they are frustrated, but can't see how their actions can be anything other than reckless driving. There wasn't even a good view of oncoming traffic.

That’s exactly the point, they’re not thinking at all about driving, off on a completely different planet with the fairies, you’ve got to be totally focused.

Yes unfortunately. The tractor and tank is a handful on its own, now I've to watch my own driving and everyone else's! Bring back lockdown

Not everyone has a LS or Coyote powered 300kW car, it takes a are bit longer to pass if your car only has 75kW on a good day....😉
