Has anyone bought a cheap s/h engine welder lately? If so it could be mine as there's now an empty space where it used to be.

I bought a big 3 phase mig with wire feed unit from Brightwells £120 about 6 years ago. Still in daily use. Awesome bit of kit

Im convinced the folks that nick the stuff get informed by others that genuinely come to the property ,,it cant all be random

what was is it and what part of the country? I’ve not bought anything second hand but often trawl the auction sites ect for equipment

There was a firm cutting trees down near electric lines here. When one quad got stolen,police caught him and the van that was meeting him. In the van was a photocopy of the consent maps that the farms sign to give permission for the work and each farm with a quad was circled. None of the blokes had any connections to the tree surgeons other than the map

The innocent looking dog walkers/cyclists ,drones ,everything nowadays can be visible with mobiles or a long lens and instantly sent back to an accomplice .
Nothing is safe

Go for a 3 phase if you have it , less nickable as well , get high amperage for those heavy jobs , Mig or MMA ? Mig for easier welding but its often not so strong as MMA plus Migs break down more often and use expensive gas ..

only if you don't know what you're doing which regretfully is all too often the case.

Actually no , Mig is not accepted for high pressure vessels (boilers/ steam pipe ) but MMA is .

I'm in that trade (as a customer engineer, not a welder) and I can assure you, MIG/MAG is widely used for pressure vessel fabrication!

It's not generally used for repair work, because of the issues with spray MAG when not in flat position, as well as logistics of gas shielding etc. Much easier for repair shops to have a set of MMA or TIG certs. Much easier to assure quality on pipe with TIG, too.

In the case of fired boilers I'm not sure, maybe you're right, it's always been TIG repair where I work and I don't get involved. But for unfired vessels made to PD 5500, MIG/MAG is acceptable, if done to the right standard (BS 15614/9606 and certified by the right body)

Tig route with low hydrogen rods is how I was taught to do boiler steam pipes .
