Have a field in second continuous spring wheat and doing a great job on the blackgrass problem. Question is if we carry on would it get take all or is it a bit risky - tia .

Take all won’t be a problem (to reduce what is already a small risk ensure clean stubbles between harvest and establishment of the following spring wheat).

I’ve had Take All in second spring wheat before, it’s not a fun experience.
Continuous spring barley would be a whole lot safer in my experience and should have the same effect on BG?

Take All has to be the most aptly name cereal disease I’ve come across.

I am very tempted to move to a wheat rotation, winter and spring.
We don't find takeall an issue with second or continuous wheat, and the ergot issue just has to be dealt with when encountered which is perhaps one or two years in five.

Thanks - remember now that years ago we had ergot in some spring wheat in a damp year - sod that again.
If you have central storage with a colour sorter and dryer, and don't need the straw, or an early entry for the next crop, it will be fine. All the above are the reasons we no longer grow any. Late drilled winter wheat until late Feb / early March, then Spring barley here.

I’ve been considering continuos spring wheat in my head over the past few weeks in an attempt to copy a North American type system of tillage in the autumn, 5 months off, drill in the spring, 4 months off, contractor to spray once or twice with fungicide and apply all N in the seed bed or shortly after, Combine, repeat. Would be blissfully simple and free up a lot of time to do other stuff way more profitable than arable farming. Main things putting me off are ergot and take-all but plenty of seed with latitude should sort the take-all and ergot is unavoidable if you’re going to get it. Spring barley would work a bit better I guess but have tried barley heavy rotations on one block and got bad ramularia issues.

🤣🤣🤣Spring barley goes from not ripe to knackered in 2 days it seems like. Tests my patience.
The thing with barley is you have to cut it raw once its around 20% mc go for it .
Take the drying hit and have all the grain
Cutting barley today just ripe and its fine and little or no losses .
There is a thread on the Forum4 Farming spring barley 21 its mainly the pros down wexico way but also a few from your side of the pond
Yields topping 4 ton acre but most crossing 3 and a half .
Read it and weep i know i do :):)!!!

All mention of the opposition is for technical reasons.....🤣🤣:)
