Ergot Claims

Anyone else seeing ergot claims into store for wheat and barley? Not saying it’s not there but I sure can’t find as much in my heap as the seem to be able to find on the weigh bridge in every load.

We certainly see more claims going into store than into mills.

The difference is that I only need one claim at a mill, the cleaning and the downgrade, to pay for all the colour sorting at the store.

Had some in the sample last year but didn’t get any claims on milling wheat 🤷🏻‍♂️. Read into that what you like but let’s put it this way I was waiting for claims that never materialised.

Have been absolutely spanked on loads again today. I swear they have a pocket full for each sample.
Can’t go in and watch them pick it?

Take a sample of your load, scoop a bowl full out that’s around 1kg worth, and pick the ergot. Easy enough to do. Don’t know what acceptable levels are there but here if you’ve got around 20 pieces you’re probably close to over.

Is it downgrade or rejection at mill?
Bread mill = reject. Then you can try and get it in to an easier tip of only a few.

The alternative is cleaning. So think haul to cleaner, cleaning cost, hauling back. So depends how far the cleaner is. In 2012, a load of milling got a redirection and cleaning cost of c£40/t. Which was unfriendly.

I think we all have a list of tips that are fastidious, and those who are less selective.

I am always relieved when CS finds ergot because it means it will be dealt with by colour sorters. Removes the risk and is much cheaper than having to redirect it for extra cleaning, which is rarely worth it.

How much can you find if you just crouch down at the front of the heap? Several pieces without looking too hard? And are you selling as feed which has a tolerance level or are you trying for human consumption which is zero tolerance?
