N prices end UK milling wheat production?

More likely milling varieties doing half a ton less than feed varieties, combined with high base prices.

I toyed with going back to milling wheats but will stick with feed, especially once the vivergo effect gets going.

Currently getting a few extra pennies for gp4 hards, that comprehensibly out yielded gp3 softs. Full spec softs £6/t extra. Waste of time.

How much N are you typically using on a milling wheat crop?

takes us at least 40-60kgs more N to get protein and millers rarely yield quite so well as a group 4

Crops don’t always make quality so you would need to factor maybe 1 ot 2 years in 5 where the extra N doesn’t increase gross output ?

plus lower yields and 1 or 2 extra passes through the crop with applications

all for £10-20 premium

Well you have told us of far bigger premiums in the past? And your total N is how much 250kg/ha????

i gave up milling 20 yers ago wetter harvest and hagburg risk too high
now with high n price and weather risk the only advantage milling varieties is is that they are generally earlier
so grow them with out the extra n for earlier harvest

I now grow clad 3 wheat lower protein required
the uk climate is also best suited to soft milling wheat for biscuit cakes and brewing
and this will export out or the southern half of the country
9 % or uk wheat in the ground is class 3
