Cvx or active drive8

Looking at case maxxum 150. Most time would be used for mowing with 2x10ft plain mowers, baling, carting 22ft baler trailer and 10t tipper. Dont need no fancy led’s, screens or electro spools. What are the pros and cons of both transmissions? Currently dont use any cvt transmission.

You can't have the CVX (continuously variable transmission) without having the Multicontroller arm rest, I'm fairly sure you CAN spec manual spools with it. The CVT is more money, not loads in comparison, but a few thousand. In my eyes however, well worth it for what we want, we have 2 of them now. Around 6,500hrs between the 2 and wouldn't go back.

I've demo'd the AD8 transmission and it's as close as you can get to a vario without it being a vario. Gear changes so smooth you don't notice it's changed. Plenty of over lap. So smooth. Brake to clutch feature is very nice and you can inch yourself on the brake pedal, very nice feature. Did I mention it was smooth?!

I'm sure to have the AD8 transmission you have the Multicontroller arm rest, very easy and intuitive to work out. Again, I'm sure you can spec manual spools, but the electro spools have stood the test of time so far for us and have been very reliable.

I can't recommend the mid range seat enough (top of the range is the same but leather), totally different ball game to the standard Grammer air seat.

Im mostly concerned about reliability of this new AD8 gearbox. Thats why I’m considering cvx. Would try to down spec a cvx so it would be similar money. Tnx for the tip about seat.

Go for the CVX, at least it’s stood the test of time. 2 x AD8’s here. One has had gearbox apart before 3000hrs. Not even comparable to be fair. Having had a shot of a cvx in the spring when the AD8 was out of action know what I would go for IF we go case again 🤷‍♂️

The duel clutch shifts really are super smooth, but why do they still whine like the straight cut gears on the old sixteen speed?

Or at least the one my neighbour operates does when it's passing by 😱

There's a big overlap of gears between the 3 ranges. Makes the shifts very smooth, but not so handy if you're doing PTO work. There's really only 16 distinct speeds (from memory), so for baling / raking / spraying / fert spreading etc etc, you're either going too slow or too fast with the big "jump" in speed between gears.

If you want to go slower than a couple of kph, you'll need to make sure it has the creeper box option. Again the super smooth dual clutch sequential gearbox lacks ratios here too.

If you can live with the compromise the limited number of speed ratios creates, it's a lovely gearbox to pull a trailer on the road 👍

If you do any yard work, or if you ever take a tractor anywhere near a field, ever, I mean any job at all that involves soil under the tyres activity, then go CVX.

Hope that I made my opinion clear there ? 😂

We’ve a dynamic command and auto command (same boxes but blue versions) and they are both great gearboxes but once you’ve had a CVT nothing else comes close.

Infact when I’m on the Dynamic command now, I really have to think about what I’m doing.

The demo AD8 I had it's usual 'whir' any transmission was, but certainly not the whine of the old SLE box.

That was my only reservation, lots of moving bits, they've been out a few years now and not really heard any reports. I know they were looking to introduce it to the Puma range at some point.

As I said though, once you've had the CVX its highly unlikely you will go back to anything else.

Is it the same engine in the 130 and the 145?

John deeres directdrive box hasn't been quite the succes, certainly overhere used prices are way below autopowr ones. Local dealer only sold one, which was problamatic to say the least.
If the difference is small I would think cvx is a non brainer.

There have been a few problems with the AD8 gearbox, but the thing in its favour is it comes out the side of the tractor for repair,no need to split tractor.

Almost as if they'd designed it knowing it would need frequent easy access? 🤫

It’s just practically impossible for a dual clutch transmission to be 100% reliable and last a long time. Look at cars such as the VW DSG or Stronic in Audi guise. When you think that the synchroniser has to do nearly double the work a normal synchro box does and under mechanical shifting they just can’t possibly last to silly hours.

So you prefer cvt?

Definitely for the driving experience and ultimately for the reliability aswell. Consider a certain green version that you can exchange the whole unit for £7-9k. That would only rebuild the packs in a semi powershift leaving all the synchros, bearings and forks etc original or an extra cost
Green is the way to go
