When shearlings are dear the easiest way to keep up numbers is with ewe lambs, decent xbred ewe lambs at the moment are no dearer than fat lambs and will either tup and earn their keep while growing into shearlings or run round and grow into shearlings

There are reasonably priced sheep out there if you look away from the big sales. Friend of mine has a farm to stock and was at Carlisle buying cows on Friday, thought he would just see what the ewes were making in the early breeding sale. Ended up coming away with 204 2-4 crop ewes at an average of £124. Got a tx from Hexham when he got home his cast ewes had av £124 he was quite pleased!

Its like buying second hand cars, the first 12 months is the big deprecation after that they don't loose so much.

Mule yearlings are far to strong trade of me to keep loads so I'm selling most (except the funny headed ones) and have replaced them with home bred Suffolk mule ewe lambs, half will tup the other half dry. What ever happens they will be sold next year and replaced with mules for similar money.
