UK fires up coal power plant as gas prices soar
An old coal plant has had to be brought back online after a spike in the price of natural gas.

Supply and demand
You go up and say that in Wellington....Get rid of the coal plants, replace with nuclear. Doesn't matter what the weather does then.
I am far to cynical. Anyone want to open a new coal mine in Cumbria. How about firing up one of the last coal fired power plants while the inquiry gets underway.
I agree we need our own resources.Different usage though. Cumbrian mine is for smelting coke IIRC, not burning for fuel.
To much Tui ,bro???I'm not worried, there are power companies that supply only Green Natural energy...........................yeh right..
We did produce railway lines at Workington just around the corner from the proposed call mine .the big long building which I visited years ago when they were making railway lines is now used to produce concrete panels. I heard a story the other day of a man working to replace underground railway lines in London there were 10-year-old with made in China written on them .the ones next to them were up to 100 years old and still using them were made in Workington.I agree we need our own resources.
If we can target the likes of Cumbrian coal at producing high quality steel for things like actually making the country’s railway lines etc. then it can’t be bad.
Not at the mercy of the world market and quality.
After all if it’s not produced in this country it has to be somewhere.

Birmingham city tram lines are being replaced already due to unexpected wear. No doubt supplied by a Shelby company..We did produce railway lines at Workington just around the corner from the proposed call mine .the big long building which I visited years ago when they were making railway lines is now used to produce concrete panels. Think there clueless of how steel is actually made. The Sweden factory is only replacing the heating process from LNG to Hydrogen it is not producing new steel from iron ore which normally uses coal or coke in the process. The only renewable substitute I know for this process is using torrefied wood (charcoal). There doing a similar process in St Helens with glass production replacing LNG with Hydrogen. What is the new hydrogen steel, that they were on about yesterday from Sweden, that the green zealots are saying makes carbon steel obsolete?
Absolutely 100% chapel bank the steelworks hi duty alloys etc all closed down. Can’t remember the red glow in the sky at night when they open the big doors.having said all we’ve been advertising for a tractor driver and there is no interest nobody seems to want practical work anymore.pretty much every building too do with the steel works has been levelled now and a part of it is now got houses on it… been a few years since Iv been home (i was born and bred Workington) but I’m pretty sure there’s only the big long building left now that’s a concrete place like you say… .. used too be amazing seeing the wagons hauling lumps of train track out and the freight trains moving around all the docks ect … there’s f**k all there now all the train lines around the docks are overgrown and shut off now apart from the train line running too the lumber yard at the docks … was once a hell of a lot of industry around Workington now most of it has been levelled for housing or standing abandoned

You wait till it’s cold and everyone comes home and charges their new electric car,
We will have to make choices,
