Cash is King or Not?

I don't often go shopping but today I wanted a new pair of sun glasses now that summer has arrived.
The last basic ones I bought from Boots so I thought I would go back and find another £30 pair.

Got to the till and handed over £30.00 cash and was told they only accepted card payments! Now I could have paid by card but I stood my ground and I said I wanted to pay cash and as it was the correct amount and I didn't require any change surely they could take it as it is "Legal Tender".

After a call to the Manager they accepted it!!!
A lot of old people and those on lower income, especially in rural areas still use cash. Is this the slippery slope to do away with it?

Legal tender has no bearing as that term only relates to discharging a debt. A lot of businesses have chosen to minimise the handling of cash during the pandemic as it represents a risk vector. There is also the side of things that handling cash payments costs businesses considerable sums in terms of the raw handling, banking, insurance, etc., so many are looking to minimise or reduce it further.

It’s not safe walking about with a wallet full of cash these days anyway…these new notes spring out your hand and wallet….plus I can’t stand a pocket full of slag…everything gets paid on my card or phone now

Fully agree.

I'll help you out. Send all your cash to me for disposal - I won't charge for this service 😁

Must be rough up your way if you can’t walk around with cash in your wallet.
I don’t worry about the amount of cash in my wallet but I do think about the value of the watch on my wrist in some places.
