You can't thieve from a modern till. Every user has their own login code and the till electronically records what is put in the tray and what is taken out. My father ran a business relying on tills for over 20 years and the incidence of theft from tills was basically zero. Easier to steal alcohol (from the pumps) rather than money from the till. They are also quite heavy and robust so even a smash and grab won't rob one very readily.
Card theft by various means is out of control in this country, you don't hear much of it because banks would prefer that loss mostly born by the customers to the cost to the banks of keeping their branches open, basically they class it as acceptable theft!

Maybe someone should tell Tesco then - a friend who works for them was investigated along with 7 or 8 colleagues because the till that they had all used during their shift came up short - even with a high definition camera pointing at the till they couldn't prove who was at fault.

I had a girlfriend who managed a shop in Cambridge every evening she had to go and put the cash in the night safe at the bank it wasn’t much fun wandering the streets of Cambridge with a bag of cash and I’d presume there are rougher parts of the British Isles so if a shop chooses to avoid cash I say fair play to them.

I was thinking that, as I went out and about.
The most consistent threat to me being done over is via electronic means.
Can't recall ever taking a dud note - certainly none that've come back and bitten me.
but we're targeted by fraudsters on a daily basis

Eliminating cash allows all the banks to close ever more branches, you never appreciate what you have until it has all gone, the days of starting a business by seeing your local manager have already disappeared so what chance do youngsters especially in farming have now?
This reminds me of a few years ago when I was queuing in the bank to move money from one account to another and get some cash out. The queue was about 10 deep so this woman who was on the help desk came wandering down the queue asking if she could help….she said to me “if you download our banking app and use your card more you won’t have to come to the bank and queue”
I said “if I didn’t come into the bank and others didn’t you’d be out of a job”
I went home and downloaded the banking app

a year later that branch is now a bar/restaurant….

Still have a UK bank account which is difficult to use on line, authentication codes sent to an overseas mobile from a UK bank do not work. Global Britain ??????
Authentication codes are a PITA. Trying to buy something online for only a few pounds, I was sent an email saying they had sent a code to my phone. As we get one bar reception on a good day, my phone is usually turned off, so find phone, turn on and after a couple of minutes a text message appears with the code which I enter, only to be told the code is not valid as it has expired. Ten minutes later another email with another code, enter this, but mistake a 6 for an 8, which I correct only to have a timeout cancel the transaction. Third attempt, hanging phone out the door to get a signal I get my order in. We get our shopping online with Tesco. OH has a new Tesco credit card so payment shouldn't be any bother, only if we suddenly remember we need a jar of mustard adding to the list, we have to wait for an authentication number phoned through to add a £2 jar to a list which already has a £100 of goods on it and which has been accepted without question.

we haven’t had authentication codes here for at least 10 years or probably more . . .

we’ve had online banking for at least 30 years now.

I have NEVER had any security issues or fraudulent action on any online banking, debit card or tap & go transaction. A friend of my wife once had a dodgy claim on her credit card from Dubai or somewhere ( she wasn’t there ), but the bank refunded it . . .
