Do your sums and get your house in order to farm with very little or no support the country is broke . Those who get ready for tough times are going to be in a better position and if and a big if we get any support it will be a bonus . Now is the time to prepare for the future more so than any other time in history . Well thats my thoughts some might disagree some might be thinking the same . Farming is going to change big time like it or lump it .

I cant like the post, but I will have to lump it as its all true. At least the support removal is phased over a reasonable period. The problem with doing the sums is the number change rather quickly, in past per months fuel up 30%, nitrogen up 100%, grain prices can swing up or down 10% or more in a day never mind trying to plan on what they will be 5 years from now. The increasing volatility means it has never been move difficult to "do your sums" with any degree of accuracy or confidence.

very true farming is in a sad state and it doesn’t help have Stupid Eustice in place! Best thing would be sacking him.

Well the way Farm incomes look as if they will be going in the next few years unless commodity and stock prices rise big time, the Govt will not be getting much tax back from us...!! Same with our Suppliers...
Don’t think UK farmers comes very high up the Governments Christmas Card list.
Eustace is just the messenger….
ELMS is no more than a Smoke Screen to cover up the removal of cash support.

Yep and when Wheat is grossing £500 an acre…?
The £80 an acre was set in the late nineties and was equivalent to 1.25 tones of wheat. It’s now 25 years later and the government has printed more money in the last year than it has in the entire history of money and it’s equivalent to less than a 1/3 tonne of wheat. Inflation has made the farmers dole meaningless.

ELMS is more like a version of the RDPE scheme….
To get anything you have to put money in to achieve the result….
Definitely not an annual income that the current scheme is.
The way the government is scratching around for money at the moment can’t really see any unexpected improvements.
I've been following their proposals as best I can from down here, and that is how it seems.

Dare I say, it's probably how it should be, how alot of our countries should be doing business?

You do something, upon completion send an invoice, and get paid....

...whereas the current gov't models seem to run more along the lines of "apply for funding, get the funding, blow the funding" and nobody learns from it - some stuff gets done, but alot of stuff doesn't, because there's no need for results in this system, it's more just a conduit for tax money to go back to the people that the money goes back to, that is the corporates that do very well out of the tax system

I would concur that ELMS is NO replacement for SFP/BPS/sub or whatever it's called.
I think that that one was more to maintain parity within the EEC/EU and help farmers "consolidate their position during the good times, to make getting out that much more affordable" to steal a quote from Bob Ansett

Diversification should not be used to subsidise your farming.
its a mindset thing I like to call myself a farmer ,though over the last few years weve pushed the business into various other income stream s and im glad we have, set out a few years ago to replace income from bps and i cant see any chance we will enter the new agri schemes other than on a small level

WATS EVERY1 MOANING ABOUT....? MOST FARMERS VOTED BREXIT - Wat did they think was going to happen............?
5 yrs on I still think its laughable how farmers voted - the saying that always crops up about turkeys voting 4 Xmas...... The EU was far from perfect but if nothing else it protected us from our own government, now we have to deal with the consequences of our actions come 2024.

I don't, for a split second, believe this view that ELMS has been set up to fail, or that the money isn't there, or that it is to be no more than bunny hugging money.
ELMS as it stands isn't a conspiracy, it's a cock-up. If your average farmer loses out, it wont be because Defra intended it so but because the industry did nothing to amend it from its current form.

No, diversification should not be used to subsidise people's food.
Been a lot talk in some of the papers about we may have to get used to higher food prices as people should pay the full price for their food.
In some respects it would be good to keep income streams separate.
Different bank accounts. Different tax accounts. Different records for labour use.
Too many of us don't see the clear picture.
Those who own land are often making the profit from owning the land rather than "farming".
