Light quarters.

Have been doing some analysis on our mastitis rates etc as we have red tractor at the end of the month and want to be prepared for anything.
it looks like we will end up treating fourteen cows for the season or just under 6% with a further 4 heifers coming in light in at least 1 quarter.
I have identified areas of cubicle management that can be improved upon.

however of the 14cows treated 70%of them are now light in that quarter and a further. 14% lost the quarter altogether.
what can I do to improve the situation.

I would say do a culture to id the mastitis cause. That will likely tell you a bit about why they are light and where the source of infection is.

Cows that get mastitis will never milk fully on that quarter for the rest of the season
You need to try to stop the cows getting mastitis in the first place which is easier said than done

Using the correct antibiotics, some of the new tubes are worthless. I doubt it's your fault,simply what you need a d what you can use are 2 different things

Are they related on dam or sires side? We noticed some family line are causing a higher %of mastitis? Of they are culling could be the quickest route to reducing you mastitis rate and think is there a vaccine for strep ubris now?

I'm not sure what you can do to improve but I hope you're fairly pleased with 6%.

There would be plenty of herds treating 10x that number of cows.

We treat with antibiotics and then 4 or 5 days later do another California test. If still a bit gloopy we give them a couple of garlic boluses. 80% of them end up with no cell count problems and no lost quarter.

Had one heifer calve in with mastitis one had mastitis about 10 days after calving which are obviously picked up in dry period, and after a bit of rain
Had one cow with mastitis about week after calving, but she is a bit different as she had mastitis twice in last lactation
Calved just under half herd
Always had strep uberis with cows out at grass after rain after a dry period

We've had a good year for light quarters, good as in not many, calving outside helps I'm sure, always associated light quarters with ecoli
