Farm saved seed

Been reading various post on late seed deliveries and the possibility of not getting seed in time for to plant as required. how many have seed cleaned from their farm.
if so What are your personal preferences in the keeping of seed. Only second generation from c1 or if it just looks ok. in the past I would buy foundation stock seed and multiply it for use the following year. Generally grew three different varieties and went with the best.
have been growing the same variety for the past five years now and it suits my soil type and end user very well. I’ve re cleaned that same wheat fir the past five years and haven’t found any adverse effect from doing so. I know it’s hard to see as there is no direct comparison but my yields are still at or above area average. I generally have cleaned 100 tons. Some sold to a friend but majority used my self. Personally like the idea of having enough incase weather dictates a change in rotation. The wheat I save for seed will generally be grown after beans and every effort will be made to produce a decent sized seed that is free from disease. What are your thoughts on saving seed. would You use you own seed multiple years running. This years sample off the combine. Moisture 12.9. Protein 13.4. Bushel weight 64.7 lbs or just under 81 kghl.

Are we to assume that you only have access to tired old poor performing varieties, because your Govt have not conferred the powers on the plant breeders to prevent selling your own grain to neighbours, to do with whatever they will?

Quiet the opposite there are numerous new varieties come to the market every year. Their approach is to entice you to buy with claims of better agronomics. a large portion of grain will be exported to other countries so end user requirements dictate what traits are wanted. Some new varieties are released by the bigger grain buyers with buy back clauses. Judging by your comment of old tired poor performing varieties that you buy the latest and greatest from the dealer.s. I’d rather others pay over the odds to trial a variety for the plant breeder and stick to the tried and trusted. Seen a few comments on here about guys trying various varieties and being disappointed in their disease resistance and final yield. Here too varieties are sold with claims of changing the world only to fall flat on its face.

The royality shafting is coming. seed breeders are dipping their toes in to see farmers reactions on it. It’s won’t go over well in sure but it will come. Canola and soya are covered by techology aggrements requiring no seed saving. It’s policed heavily and I’ve been checked by Monsanto for soybeans. They walked my field checking plant population and compare it to amount you bought. Got a free leather jacket for providing the info fir them As per the aggrement.

Is there any other alternative to Monsanto?
I remember 20yrs ago in Western Producer, them making an example of a Sask farmer who maintained his crop was contaminated by pollination with crop volunteers growing on the road allowance.

Just come in from using my grain cleaner to produce loads of home saved seed. Expecting a call now from the seed police buf I’m kosher, registered and all that. Beauty of sending my main crop to coop is I can use my old grain equipment for cleaning and conditioning seed. Can’t be any worse than the sh!t the trade try to sell us.😆

there are plenty of other seed distributors but if it’s gmo seed they come with a technology agreement. I can remember too the farmer Monsanto broke slowly with one law suit after another until he had lost everything fighting them. Set a example for others not to flaunt the patent laws. Sad to sat it but we are all slaves to them in one way or another. One good advance made in canola was the introduction of a pod shatter gene. its unreal how much wind it will stan and not a single pod ruptured.

Often use own seed and usually get someone in to clean and dress it, then the royalties are paid through them. If I drill straight from the heap then I pay BSPB accordingly. However the bill from the cleaners is alot of money, so wondering about dressing it myself through an auger into the drill. Do other folk do this and where do you get the seed dressing from?

I’ve cleaned and dressed my own in the past but it’s a time consuming job. Have it cleaned now by an old fella that near 80. He does a good job and finds customers if your wanting to sell some. Dressing it I use a small 12v pump that will meter it out consistently and a small nozzle with a return valve to restrict the returns to pressure the nozzle. I mix it with water to cover the seed better. Usually run it thru twice to cover better and get the amount correct. Don’t dress and put into the drill. It will be damp and seed flow will be comprised and will put you in tears. Best done into a trailer the day before then into drill to breakup any stiff flowing seed. You’ll notice a better colour compared to commercial sources making you wonder about lower rates being used. Only run an auger half full as it will bind and nit have the tumbling mixing effect.
