Been reading various post on late seed deliveries and the possibility of not getting seed in time for to plant as required. how many have seed cleaned from their farm.
if so What are your personal preferences in the keeping of seed. Only second generation from c1 or if it just looks ok. in the past I would buy foundation stock seed and multiply it for use the following year. Generally grew three different varieties and went with the best.
have been growing the same variety for the past five years now and it suits my soil type and end user very well. I’ve re cleaned that same wheat fir the past five years and haven’t found any adverse effect from doing so. I know it’s hard to see as there is no direct comparison but my yields are still at or above area average. I generally have cleaned 100 tons. Some sold to a friend but majority used my self. Personally like the idea of having enough incase weather dictates a change in rotation. The wheat I save for seed will generally be grown after beans and every effort will be made to produce a decent sized seed that is free from disease. What are your thoughts on saving seed. would You use you own seed multiple years running. This years sample off the combine. Moisture 12.9. Protein 13.4. Bushel weight 64.7 lbs or just under 81 kghl.
