Clements offering £30 per hour for field workers

Looked up the Clements website & they are offering upto £30 per hour if piece rate can be acheived.

As a small veg grower, I may as well plough mine in and apply.

For the long term sucess of my business I shall harvest my own. We are having a decent year, but no way acheiving prices to be able to pay £30 per hour.

Aldi selling small caulie at 59p which is little more than production cost if you take into account transport, harvesting, packaging etc. Have to harvest one a second to pay harvesting cost for instance. at £30 PER HOUR.

Doubtless all veg will be 29p per pack at Christmas

The country has gone totally crackers, with high costs I'm considering options for next year. I'm glad I'm in a postion to never work again, but wish to do so.

Are they not saying they MAY pay £30 hour but actually in real terms it will end up more like £12/15 hour for most pickers as the work rate to make anything like £30 hour will all but be impossible to achieve day after day?

Sounds more like it ,they`ll have to do better than that , ie guarantee at least £16.00 ph or potential pickers will stack shelves in pleasant conditions for £12.00+ ph.

They will entice people in with £30 hour but within days when they realize they cannot earn anything like that most will quit and cue Clements posting on SM that UK workers do not want the work....

I agree its a stunt to pressure goverment for a return to normal.

Wish I could go for a week to see the real situation, I can knock on with a knife, although output is often affected by weather & uniformaty of the crop. I can do 3,200 class I swedes a day so at £240 per day wages about 8p per swede. About 5 ton of white cabbage or best hand picking day of sprouts would be 50 20 pound nets so about £5 per net labour charge.

So who is paying? how can Aldi sell caulie at 59 p. Same week wholesalers selling better larger caulies at £1.40 allbeit for just one week.

Not gonna lie… you couldn’t pay me enough too stand on a potato grader, or lay on a picking table or walk up and down a field picking or walk up and down polytunnels picking… I’d want £30hr for just generally picking them not running round like a mad man trying pick as many as possible… it’s back breaking mind numbing work that I’d want too take home £50,000 a year too even entertain the idea 😂

But what price would veg have to be.

Whats the game with the 29p veg bags at Christmas. Surely we need to be like USA with a min selling (retail) price?

I love it, don't have to do it educated to A level standard & wealthy than most. The fresh air, the seasons, the great exercise, difference in yeild.

Although I sometimes wish I'd gone into drystone walling which I may well retire to doing. Although in that job you really need to do the fancy work around the up market houses to make the really good money.
