There are good reasons why the UK suffered more than many and that is population density , we have one of the highest in the worlds and a population which commutes far more than most. We also have a very high rate of intermingling at Football matches at the pub and numerous other events. This leads to a far faster spread , however all countries will find over time the virus will travel through the entire population but some remote communities may be free for some years yet

I suspect there are plenty of areas of the world that have far higher population density than the UK, just not if you take figures for the whole country. Plenty of cities with people living on top of each other, whish you would think was rife for spreading an air borne virus.

No intermingling to see here? 🤣

I'd go with the infection stats being bilge tbh.

Well the UK is 90%+ vaccinated. Clearly vaccination does little or nothing to stop the spread of the virus. All it does is lesson the severity, and hopefully keep the death rate down. Folks have lost the plot a bit. Marathons. Football matches. Bike races. Crowded beaches. Packed holiday resorts. One mask between 10,000 people. A slight relaxation of lockdown last spring rather than a free for all " Get back to normal ", and Corvid could have been consigned to the history books.
Numpties are to blame, not Borris nor Brexit.

This is the point- who knows? Are you going by announced cases, hospital cases, ICU beds filled, deaths etc etc?
There have been quite a few attempts to check the validity of the figures this last year. The UK figures are not far out appartently. The Indian figures, especially for deaths, were being politically suppressed espcially during their election. I heard reports from Mumbai and other big cities that statisticians had tallyed each hospital's death records and found the official death figures were just under 10% of the true level at their peak....

I think if you look at the stats the vaccine has reduced infection, however large parts of the country saw very few cases especially in the countryside and they are now catching up. Remember there are still large numbers of children never been jabbed and while it may be a very minor disease to them it is still there.
Certainly having a jab in no way gives the protection everyone had hoped but it is stopping the deaths.
sorry how this has appeared not sure why

I was in the veg industry in the 90's and many people were forecasting the imminent end due to the impossibility of recruiting staff to pick and grade etc. There was a sharp decline in the production of fruit and veg as it migrated towards those countries with cheaper labour. Then the fall of the Berlin Wall allowed the flood of workers who were not just prepared to work, were actually keen and did not disappear on Wednesdays to go and claim their dole.
Men and women who were decent, who did not, as I was a couple of times, proposition you, but just wanted to crack on with the job in hand and really could not believe the wages we were paying. Many went back home with enough cash after a season to buy a house and car.
Of course the situation has changed a lot know in the industry, the veg growing is far more professional , dominated by a few large growers who are in the position to employ such staff full time. This will appeal far more to many who Arte after a regular job and not a few weeks in thew autumn.
You make a fair point. Salad grower near us just couldn't get staff this last summer. That said, was only offering minimum wage - so no wonder really.

Suspect we'll see wage inflation for lower paid jobs... Or at least it looked that way, until we just issued some Visas.

Why just poultry workers and lorry drivers? Don't know. Pig processing short staffed..

Before the Eastern Europeans we were really dredging the depths of humanity. There were some decent people of course, but many stank of drink from the night before and were not fit to work and of course this put off the good ones. The best were the women as they did seem to have a work ethic the men lacked. They were worse if on piece work as they cheated right in front of your eyes it was a learning experience!

I suspect it is getting near impossible to recruit staff particularly for pig processing as it would be an acceptable excuse to turn down for the unemployed

The Labour Party are crackers if they think near doubling min wage is a good idea! We might as well just sack the entire workforce and import everything 🙄.
Its one of the few things I agree on with a Labour politico , wages do need to be £15.00 as you need that to live on, and guess what , many get the equivalent of £15.00 ph by way of Universal Credit , family allowance and numerous other payments , all of which is picked up by the tax payer , so if you pay staff with a family minimum wage your business is being subsidised by the tax payer .
